We have in and out burgers here in Vegas and Palomine is absolutely correct , they are great burgers . Here in Vegas we also have Fatburgers and they are about the same type ( very limited menu ) BUT , they are MUCH LARGER !   The Double meat kingburger is 3/4 pounds of glorious excess meat and there ain't no way to eat 'em without making a mess . I love 'em !

We have Fatburgers here too of course, but I would suggest that they are of a distinctly different genre burgerwise... quite tasty, and yes larger, but different and IMHO w/o some of the basic elemental culinary charm of In'n'Out. Also, the Fatburger here does have breakfast, chicken, chili and a few other things on the menu... not as diverse as Astroburger but probaby 3 times the number of items that In'n'Out features.

I've never had a Fatburger.  Must be a west coast thing.

In'n'Out on Sunset in Hollywood last night, mostly just because I was bored. There, I am 98% sure that I saw the two actors from That 70s Show (Kelso and Fez) leaving in their cars (a Cadillac SUV/pickup thing and a Benz 600 convertible respectively). Still hungry and bored afterwards (a dangerous combination) I hit a Wendy's drivethrough on the way home for chicken nuggets. To assuage my guilt at such heedless glutony, I then took my dog for an hour-long midnight walk around the neighborhood in a misty drizzle. Today, I've eaten nothing but fruit, nuts and some lentil soup as an act of contrition for last night's indulgences. Sadly, I am bored and hungry again tonight though....

Thai takeout tonight. Chinese broccoli (you know, like broccoli rabe... thin and bitter w/o the flowery heads) with salt cod (wonderful, sort of the Thai equivalent of collard greens with a ham hock) and some kind of mixed rad na, which is basically wide flat rice noodles in a mild gravy topped with a little bit of everything (fried egg, squid, shrimp, chicken, pork, more chinese broccoli (I omitted the pork stomach, but I think they snuck some in anyway). Pretty good overall. Last night was a cappicola and provelone sandwich with a bowl of homemade minestrone from a good Italian deli in Burbank. I also finally got back to Las Ruinas last week (see post above) and was mistaken: they don't have pablano pepper tacos (gringos actually is what I mean) so I had a chicken and an al pastor (marinated pork) which turns out to be my favorite. If it weren't for my dog, and good food once in while, life would be much less pleasant.

Pot roast with carrots and potatoes.  Slow roasted at 275 degrees for 4 hours.  Talk about tender...I could cut it with a slight wind.

You call that slight? I could smell it clear over here.

I had bacon wrapped venison (backstrap) steak and home made apple sauce.

Supper last night was elk chili. Another successful experiment.

Bachelor's Self-indulgent Teriyaki Combo Bowl (serves 4, or 3 hungry bachelors)

On more than one occasion girlfirends have remarked on my culinary skills, and once sated have shown their appreciation in ways that were much appreciated by me (the way to a girl's heart is via her stomach too! ). Single male friends older than I have, upon joining me for dinner, asked why I'm not married. Each, in their own way, was offering compliments on my cooking. Which I actually find somewhat surprising, as I consider my cooking to be of the 'bachelor' genre... that sort of unfancy but satisfying cuisine that any person who likes to both eat and cook eventually learns to do as a matter of necessity and self-sufficiency. The goal of course is to come up with something good to eat (that also reheats fairly well for a 2nd or 3rd meal later) without too much fuss. Thus, I offer you tonight's selection: "Bachelor's Self-indulgent Teriyaki Combo Bowl."

Ingredients:

1/2 lb. of lean Tri-tip (any grillable beef may be substituted)
2 large chicken breasts (have the butcher butterfly them so that they're of an even thickness overall)
1 medium to large onion (any variety will do... I like sweet and/or red onions best)
2-3 small peppers...any sweet to mildly spicy variety (anaheim, hungarian, pasilla, bell, etc...) is okay.
1 cup white rice (I like jasmine rice but use whatever you want)
1&1/2 cup low sodium organic chicken or vegetable broth (in memory of Zasha)
1/4 bag frozen peas
1 teaspoon of curry powder
Olive oil (just a bit)
Marinade: soy, honey, spicy pepper puree
Teriyaki baste/glaze

Night before: place the Tri-tip and chicken breasts in a container or ziplock baggie filled with marinade to soak overnight in the fridge. I made the pepper puree myself earlier with a variety of misc. spicy peppers from the farmer's market using one of those inexpensive mini-food processors: just remove stems and seeds, and buzz 'em for maybe 10 seconds, put 'em in a bowl and add soy and honey and that's your marinade. Alternatively, you could use bottled teriyaki marinade and add a bit of hot sauce for spice.

Start the rice: I recently started using a $15. rice-cooker and will probably never make rice in a pot ever again. Just put everything in and click the 'on' switch... that's it: no time, no temperature, no burnt rice... just perfectly cooked fluffy grains. Since mine doesn't have a non-stick interior, I do put a little olive oil in first. Then I add the rice, the broth, the frozen peas and curry powder. Turn it on and 25 minutes later you'll have a perfect golden rice pilaf. I'm using the curry powder not for flavor really but just for the tumeric it contains, which will turn the rice yellow w/o the expense of saffron. If you don't like peas, try white beans or red/yellow lentils, etc... just something to add protein and texture.

The rest: cut onion and peppers into quarters (pieces too large to fall thru the grill) and over a medium flame char them slightly (won't take more than 2 or 3  minutes). After charred, chop them up roughly into bite size pieces and put them in a pan with a bit of olive oil to soften somewhat. While they're sauteing, grill the beef and chicken... be careful not to overcook them... in fact, you might want to slightly undercook them since you'll then remove them, chop them into bite-sized pieces and add them to the pepper and onions in the pan too. Add some teriyaki sauce and stir for another minute and that's it. Note: you could make everything in the pan alone (without the grill) but personally, I'd sacrifice the pan before I'd do without the grill: the slight char and carmelization provided by grilling is more than worth the extra step.

Portion out the yellow rice and peas, and top with the teriyaki mixture. Have a side salad if you like and serve with your favorite beverage... if indulging I suggest Kirin Ichiban. If tea-totalling, perhaps Diet Snapple. A nice Merlot would be good too. If you want, you can substitute shrimp or salmon and/or tofu for the beef and/or chicken. Just remember that shrimp cook very quickly so add them right at the end to the pan (few things are sadder than overcooked shrimp). And tofu only needs to be heated up...  make sure you buy extra firm tofu (also sometimes called "#5") as softer grades will simply fall apart in the pan. Finally, if you go with bell peppers, remember that Holland bells are MUCH more flavorful than domestic bells, although they cost more... worth it if you're trying to impress someone.

Invite a friend and enjoy! Be forewarned, single female friends may, after eating, be inclined to show their appreciation for a good meal. Don't say I didn't warn you!

Saw an old post in this thread from Pal about In-N-Out Burger.  Seems they're about to open their first location here in Tucson.  I've had to listen to all our So. Cal. transplants going on and on about them, so soon I'll finally get to see what the deal is.

That's very funny! Like "Eating Raoul" or "Delicatessen" ...both good movies involving cannibalism. To answer the first Q, I said that I hadn't met the right girl, which is true... or if I have I just don't know it yet!

The reason I ask - I’ve been asked the same thing several times - I just wondered if you had a smarter answer that I have.
