Talapia steaks, basmati rice, and minted peas. Except The Daughter insisted on chicken. The only problem is that the chicken has to be started an hour before the fish. Poor, poor pitiful me.

I was a latch key kid... until my folks stopped working. As such, I pretty much lived on cereal, PB&Js and TV dinners ...one of my favorites was this:

It's nothing exotic: just macaroni with ground beef in tomato sauce, but nicely done. Like most frozen dinners, it's best when cooked in a regular oven which is a good thing, since though microwaves existed when I was a kid, we didn't have one (this was back in the days before instant gratification was the norm ;)). Anyhoo, I haven't been grocery shopping in over a week, so my options for dinner tonight were limited to what I had on hand. Since I don't eat frozen dinners anymore (well, almost never ;)) I did have the fixings to make a fairly decent approximation of my childhood Stouffer's favorite: macaroni and beef in tomato sauce. Though mine started with a pan full of carmelized onions and was a bit spicier than I'm sure I remember it being, it was good comfort food.

Unrelated, I had Chick-fil-A for the very first time the other day. Having read/heard so much about it, I was prepared to be disappointed given all the hype. It was basically delicious. Nothing fancy: just a tasty chicken sandwich. Which, given the plethora of bland, unpleasant and/or mediocre chicken sandwiches out there, is no mean feat. The waffle fries weren't as amazing as all the reviews on Yelp would have you believe, though the Chick-fil-A sauce (a sort of mild honey mustard) would be good on anything.

Spent all of the last couple of days in the garden, so I need the calories. ;)

Working on it now. Organic casarecce pasta, my usual marinara sauce, and minted peas. The daughter loves pasta, the wife loves minted peas, and I eat whatever's left.

Ate at a burger place called Five Guys on Flamingo road and Ft Apache Blvd and it was very, very good. Menu is almost as small as In-n-Out but the burgers, even the " small" burgers are huge and the small fries are much bigger than McDonald's supersize. They are made fresh and they are fried with the skins on them. But what I really like is the vinegar you can put on the fries, just the way the canucks like them, and the funky self serv Coke machines with a messload of variations on Coke. They have them through the country even though the Vegas store ( only one ) is six months old. I like them more than Smasburgers or Fatburgers and, sacrilegeous as it seems ...In-n-Out  :o.

Expecting company tonight, so by 8AM I had dinner in the slow cooker (pic attached). That's a beef roast browned in a spice/flour mixture, with assorted vegetables and my own chicken stock mixed with chipotle sauce. We'll see how it is nine hours from now... I'm optimistic. ;)

Yummy.  Chuck shoulder roast?

Pal replies: yes, if that's the same as beef shoulder (which I think it is). 9 hours in the crock pot should render it fork-tender. :)
Added later: it was DELICIOUS... exactly what you imagine pot roast should taste like. Fed six (including some seconds) and I've got a few servings worth of tasty leftovers too! :) -Pal

I love the restaurants. It's about the only Mexican-themed food I can get the daughter to eat.

Eating alone this evening (and very much wishing I were having dinner with a particular friend who sadly lives nowhere near me) I quickly made a beautiful thick salmon steak in a very hot pan (to crisp the skin, which I love) along with sauteed peppers and onions in a sweet soy glaze over rice.

Just a couple of cheeseburgers on the BBQ, but they were delicious.

Ate them while watching The Fantastic Mr. Fox, which I'm enjoying very much.

After a long and mildly disappointing day, carbs were definitely called for... thus my variation on Hugo's 'Pasta Mama' made with an assortment of veggies roasted on the grill: onions, peppers, Indian egggplants, mushrooms, two kinds of garlic and Brussel sprouts (photo attached). A pound of high-quality pasta cooked al dente, drained and tossed in a hot buttered pan with a few scrambled eggs and two kinds of cheese (queso fresco and parmesan). As soon as the eggs set, add the veggies and give the whole thing another toss and top with basil.

Then happy eatings, accompanied by a dark beer and 'Aurelio Zen: Cabal' on PBS (http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=aurelio%20zen&source=web&cd=2&ved=0CGUQFjAB&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.pbs.org%2Fwgbh%2Fmasterpiece%2Fzen%2Findex.html&ei=BpLiT72mNees2gWI8vS0Bw&usg=AFQjCNHCLjXlkU9CsE6o05SkoqMET_Lhjg). :)

1. Diet Coke
2. cigarette

I think that's the saddest thing I've read here in a long time. :(

How I miss our Notty. :( :( :(

Added later: dinner for one tonight :( which consisted of a salmon steak and sweet potato wedges on the grill, along with red rice and a mixed salad. Served with a nice Pinot Grigio and afterwards a piece of German Chocolate cake (which I did not make as baking is a skill I've yet to find time to develop).

A vast expanse:

Proceeding unto the boundless horizon: shredded rotisserie chicken, accompanied (as is its wont) by assorted veggies from the farmers market including (but not limited to) broccoli, red onion, carrot, garlic, parsley, spicy-skinny red Japanese peppers (from my garden), etc... afterwards tossed with buttered Rummo brand "Lenta Lavorrazione" Fettucini 15 (prepared al dente and properly buttered and tossed with fresh basil also from my garden and grated Manchego cheese of course) and served with a nice salad and Pinot Grigio. Enjoyed with a friend, though I guiltily admit to pathetically wishing it was (insert name of online friend with whom I've become enamored... you know who you are).  :-*

All this, while listening to Serra Pelada by Philip Glass at almost unbearable volume (after my dinner guest had departed) while doing the dishes.

Also: I drank my fair share of Hefeweizen such that I can't read the text on the very-infrequently-used remote for the DVD/CD player. ;)
