Body Japon, a company based in the backwater Saitama Prefecture city of Niiza, has employed the talents of actress Aya Sugimoto to promote its Bust Up Drops, or B-up Drops, as the company refers to them.
Sugimoto claims in an ad for the company that sucking on one of the candies every day has helped her maintain the figure she exposed for what is currently Japan's best-selling nude photo spread.
Body Japon has no doubt that the sweets are not mere suckers.
"Just one or two a day of these drops and even the worst bust will turn into the most beautiful," Asahi Geinoquotes its newspaper advertisements as saying. "Putting power into breast cells and mammary glands, expect to grow at least one cup size a month."
Body Japon's ads note the candies are made with a variety of herbs, vegetables and other natural ingredients, including yams. Women boasting of going from a bust size of 78 centimeters to 88 centimeters are also included in the commercial, but Body Japon gets its credibility from an interview with the busty Sugimoto.
"My boobs are so big, it's hard to maintain the right shape," the 34-year-old performer says in an interview printed on the Body Japon ads. "I can tone my muscles through dance, but thanks to fat cells and mammary glands, no matter what you do it's impossible to keep your breasts in shape. Being my age, I knew I had to do something about it. And that's when I started using B-up Drops. I've tried a number of products like this, but none work as effectively as B-up Drops. It's like my upper breasts were balloons that somebody has just put air in."
Surprisingly, experts suggest that Sugimoto may not be making a booby. They say she may be onto something.
"Thanks to women like hostesses spreading the message of these products through word of mouth, they've recently become quite popular. Because they're made of vegetables containing female hormones, it's quite possible they could increase breast size, even if not quite by a full cup size," Takayuki Kubo, a Tokyo medical doctor, tells Asahi Geino.
But Kubo warns that as well as enlarging breasts, the candy drops also increase the size of fat cells, leading to extra padding on women where they least want it - their hips, stomach and bottom.
Clinical tests a Chiba Prefecture doctor carried out on the drops weren't conclusive when it came to whether the candies actually gave women bigger breasts. These tests did, however, note that the candies were good for the skin.
"Considering they don't have harmful side-effects, it's probably all right to use them as a dietary supplement," physician Kubo says.
Stacked Sugimoto remains an avid fan of B-up Drops.
"She's been using them since December last year, more as a health supplement than for any effect they have on her bust," a spokesman for the actress' management agency tells Asahi Geino. "And the effects are just as good as she advertises."
