A photo of a submarine I served on from 1982 to 1984, the USS Puffer (SSN-652) in this photo transiting to the Point Loma Naval Submarine Base in San Diego, California. She was a 637 class nuclear submarine and I was an Auxiliary man in the boat. There were two types of Machinist Mates in subs, Nukes who ran the nuclear power plant and Auxiliary Men, who took care of the hydraulics, pneumatics, sanitary systems (therefore our moniker shithouse mechanics) and the emergency diesel.

I've only been in a sub once at a boat show - not a place I could work for long.  Sub mariners are a special breed.

While on the Puffer, we once spent 122 days under the water straight while doing reconnaissance by chasing Ivan in the Western Pacific and Indian Oceans. We had resupplied in Pearl Harbor and then proceeded toward Petropavlovsk in the Kola peninsula of Siberia and we then followed one of the Russian submarines past Japan, Taiwan and then they proceeded to the Fujian province of Communist China and we stopped following them and we went to the former British Colony of Hong Kong. After a few days there, we proceeded south toward Singapore and stopped there for a couple of days and got some supplies, mostly food. We then went through the Strait of Malacca and then we proceeded to the Indian Ocean and for 122 days straight we were underwater and monitored the Russian Fleet, their buddies at the time the Indian Fleet and their spy ships and recorded their activities. We then, after 122 days, tied up in Diego Garcia and did some maintenance and got replenished, especially food. We then went To Perth in Western Australia and had a blast there.  :)

I was watching a video last night incidentally on how subs communicate underwater.  I find subs fascinating.  122 days is a long time not to see the sky.  Don't you guys get better pay than normal navy sailors?

Beginning prior to World War 1, it was in both the Royal Navy and the US Navy where sailors had to volunteer to become submarine crew members and since submarines in those days were hazardous machines, crew members got Hazard pay in addition to standard pay. You also get Sea pay when underway at sea. We also got better food rations. On Fridays, we got steak AND lobster which was very uncommon in surface ships manned by Skimmer Pukes, the name we submariners gave to surface warfare ships sailors and they called us Fucking Bubbleheads, and we would get steak pretty much everyday when I was serving. The fact is, there are two main types of naval warships, Submarines and targets.  ;D

Since we are talking about submarines, this is an artist rendering of the newest ballistic missile submarine being built by the Electric Boat Shipyard in New London, Connecticut, The USS District of Columbia and she will be the largest submarine ever built in the United States displacing 20,300 tons. She should be roaming the seas at the end of this decade.  :)

Okay so I saw these vehicles transporting some of the Artemis crew about at NASA.  I’ve never seen them before.  Couldn’t make out any identifying badges.  Anyone know who makes them or anything about them?  This is a screen grab.

UPDATE EDIT: The American company that makes these electric vehicles is called Cannoo.  Check ‘em out at cannoo.com

Can you Cannoo? :P

The posters the Star Wars sequels should have had.

(Say what you will about the movies, but these posters are awesome and fully in line with those from the original trilogy)

"'Embarrassed' mum speaks out after son's 'mile high club' video goes viral"

The mother of a young man caught joining the mile-high club on an EasyJet flight has spoken out against his antics.

The viral clip, which has made rounds across social media, shows a flight attendant opening the plane's toilet door and revealing two travellers at it to the entire plane.

Fellow passengers can be heard cheering and laughing, as the staff member stands there in utter shock.

The 23-year-old has since been identified as Piers Sawyer, who was travelling to Ibiza to celebrate his birthday.

According to his mum, Elaine, he had only met the woman at the airport before boarding the flight.

"I was watching Loose Women and they were talking about it on there, and some of Piers’s friends started sending me the clip," the 51-year-old told The Sun. "It’s not something a mum wants to see."

She went on to say that her son "doesn't want to talk about it," and that "he probably just wants to forget it."

Elaine continued: "You’re aware these things are going to happen at the holiday destination but you don’t expect it to happen on the flight."

"But he’s a 23-year-old single lad on his birthday, going to Ibiza. It’s a party plane," Elaine added. "You just don’t think about stuff sometimes. Yes, it’s embarrassing but I don’t think they were doing anyone any harm."

She went on to suggest that the member of staff "shouldn't have just opened the door," adding: "The whole flight was egging him on and even he was laughing."

A spokesperson for EasyJet said: "We can confirm that this flight from Luton to Ibiza on 8 September was met by police on arrival due to the behaviour of two passengers onboard."

A model of the F-16 which Ukraine will receive in their fight against Russia soon enough. What is amazing is that the first model came out in 1974, almost fifty years ago, yet it remains one of the premier fighter/bomber aircraft in the world and it is still superior to pretty much anything that Russia has right now.  :o :)

Neat, Shadowmuse!  I'd never seen or heard of them or their manufacturer before either.  Very futuristic looking, as is appropriate.   :)
