Things that make you go, "Hmm..."
« on: October 16, 2008, 01:55:00 PM »
Why does Canada exist?  Why hasn't the U.S. "absorbed" it yet?  Surely there have been opportunities.

Consider all that additional space.  Consider all those natural resources.  Consider that, as global temperatures continue to rise, the farm fields of Southern Canada will become the most bountiful on Earth.  Consider that the entire country is peopled with goofballs.  This plum is ripe for the picking!  Do the right thing, Obama.  Invade Canada.

(MD is gonna love this thread.)

 Clive Clusser (I think) had an adventure novel based around the idea of a merger between the US and Canada... I forget the name of it... something about an old/lost treaty found in a submerged locomotive maybe... I read it a couple of decades ago so am not sure.

BTW, not being overtly flirty or anything here, but when I saw the title of this thread, the first thing I thought of was that photos of your pretty face make me go 'hmmm...'.

POM speaks rightly -- Cussler's 1981 Dirk Pitt adventure "Night Probe!" deals with the idea of some document turning up and Canada sort of automatically shrugging its shoulders and saying "Oh, okay, we're yours now."  However, if you've ever read a Dirk Pitt novel, they are wildly absurd -- rather like the idea of a United States of Canada ...

And may I add: Arsenio lives!

S.M. Stirling's "Draka" series has the U.S. from Alaska thru Panama; Harry Turtledove's alternate history of the Civil War thru WW2 has Canada as Occupied Territory.

If (English) Canadians can barely tolerate French Quebec, how do you think they'd fare as U.S. citizens?

It doesn't matter; in a couple decades, Canada, U.S. and Mexico will form the North American Union.

<bwhahahaha!!>
Stand up for what you believe, even if you must stand alone.

Because we have completely different origins.

US = English.

Canada = French, taken over by the English.

Mexico = Aztec / Mayan + Spanish.

We would never be able to successfully integrate and assimilate those cultures. There's also never been a real reason to do so. But we did take quite a bit of Mexico as the spoils of war in 1848.

The ground is deep with fallen leaves and nuts of White and Red Oak, and of Beech, that line and fill the footprints and the ruts which all along the wooded pathway reach. First claim, of course, to chipmunk and to squirrel for bleak mid-Winter sustenance belongs, as all around old leaves descend and twirl about, through feathered autumn songs.

We don't HAVE to take over Mexico, it's moving in all by itself!

Oh, notty! You're just trying to rile MD. You've read enough history to know that we tried it three times. They kicked our pudgy pink asses each time...
Someday, chi1dren, this entire fuck-up will be yours.

Busted.

But seriously...Canada ought to double up on the mounties, or else everyone will be licking their chops in a couple decades, looking for a piece of pie.

Heh. You left out the bit about all those oil reserves.  Ripe for the accusations of WMD and then invading... err, I mean, reviewing NAFTA.

Speaking of which, I just heard today that the TN visa duration has been extended from 1 to 3 years before requiring renewal.

As for where the USA will be 20 years from now in terms of territory?  I'm leaning more in the direction of the scenario put forth in Snow Crash.

Something that made me go "Hmm..." this morning:

I was in the gym working out.  The gym looks out onto the pool area of our complex.  A guy goes running past the window I'm looking out.  At first I just see the top half.  He's wearing a bikini top. I looked again to make sure  (morning eyes, you can't really trust them).  I wasn't mistaken.  He turns the corner, still visible through the windows of the gym, and runs toward the hot tub.  I notice that he's wearing a denim mini-skirt.  If that's not bad enough, I see the tops of the bottom half of the bikini.  It's a thong bikini.

He jumps into the hot tub and starts taking photos of himself with his camera phone.  About 15 minutes later a friend of his turns up.  They chat a while.  He also takes photos with his phone.

After another 5 or so minutes, Man-kini climbs out of the hot tub.  He is no longer wearing the kini top.  He is no longer wearing anything.  I briefly thank the powers that be that I was not subjected to the image of the 'kini thong.  But this man is naked.  And he's standing about 10 feet from me.  It's cold out, but not that cold.  This is Texas afterall.  Only a certain part of him is suffering from the cold.  It looks like it's suffering a lot.

Then as quick as he came (no, not literally ) , he was off again.  Running through the apartment carpark as naked as the day he was born.

Jerry, George Costanza: Elaine!
Jerry: Do women know about shrinkage?
Elaine: What do you mean like laundry?
Jerry: No, like when a man goes swimming afterwards.
Elaine: It shrinks?
Jerry: Like a frightened turtle!
Elaine: Why does it shrink?
George Costanza: It just does.
Elaine: I don't know how you guys walk around with those things.
