As Deni grew up, even with her father a university professor and her mother a civil engineer, the household had to grow some of their own food because the commercial distribution channels in Eastern Europe were still troubled, even many years after the collapse of Soviet Communism. All the children in the household helped with the garden and livestock, as well as excelling in their academic studies.
