“I put pretty, fun pictures on the internet. If you don’t like them, don’t look”

A plus-size model from Belfast has revealed how she went from avoiding the beach for years to racking up over 14,000 Instagram followers with body-positive pics.

20-year-old Aimee Turley missed out on life for years because of her weight. She told Belfast Live: “I was just not living my life because I was so ashamed of my body. I would not go out with my friends. In summer, everybody was going to the beach. I hadn’t been to the beach in years because I was just so embarrassed. And then I just realised and thought, ‘What am I doing?' I’m a 20-year-old woman and I need to get out and live my life while I can.”

Aimee moved into a flat in the Ormeau area with her 20-year-old boyfriend Daniel, and her confidence began to improve.

Aimee said: “I started buying clothes to show off my body. It looked good and I liked it.”

The 20-year-old, who only wore black, began to choose the colourful clothes she had once been fearful of wearing. She started taking pictures and putting them on social media - getting really positive feedback. Aimee said: “I got compliments from people. Strangers in the street would stop me and it just made me feel really good about myself, so I just kept doing it.”

A year later, Aimee has over 14,000 followers on Instagram, as well as a growing YouTube following, which she uses as a platform to promote body positivity.

The 20-year-old said: “I love doing it. People are reaching out to me now saying how much my Instagram helps them. It just makes me feel so good that I’m able to help other women out there feel much better about who they are.”

While Aimee has a mainly-amazing following of positive fans, her social media presence has not come without its challenges.

Speaking about negative comments, she said: “It’s definitely something you experience just as a big woman who’s alive. People always assume that plus size women are so unhealthy, that we don’t do anything. You are only seeing my body, you don’t know what my lifestyle is like. They just need to realise it’s none of their business. It was kind of hard to deal with at the start, but it gets easier. The important thing to realise is that someone else who takes time out of their day to put someone else down is not a good person. You should not care about their opinions. What’s one negative comment to hundreds of other amazing comments? They don’t hurt me now, but it makes me feel angry that they’re going to do that to other people. I know that I’m happy and gorgeous. I don’t need their validation.”

So, after a year as an influencer, would Aimee recommend other women who are lacking in confidence to do the same?

“It’s something you can try to see if it is for you,” Aimee said, "Not everyone enjoys it. The best thing to realise is that you just need to stop worrying about other people and you just need to live your life for yourself because you only have one life and you need to do everything to have the best one. Sitting in your house not doing anything because you’re afraid of what other people might think - they don’t care that you’re sitting in the house. You need to do stuff for you. People also need to realise that there’s nothing you can specifically say to help someone. They have to do it themselves, whenever they're ready.”

At the end of the day, Aimee is happier than she's ever been because she is doing what makes her feel happy.

And to sum it up perfectly, she said this: “I put pretty, fun pictures on the internet. If you don’t like them, don’t look.”
