Not sure if you read about this in the news TODAY. The producer of that DVD was an outfit called Livedoor.
Livedoor is sort of a Japanese Yahoo. It was an internet portal, and they make software, they produce adult content, DVDs, DVD rental websites...and on and on and on.
The stock was very hot - The head of Livedoor is a guy called Takafumie Horie...33 years old.
He tried a hostile takeover of Nippon Broadcasting - the NBC of Japan - it failed.
He tried to buy a team - The Hiroshima Carp - in the Japanese Major League Baseball League. It failed.
He ran for a seat in the Japanese Legislature last year and lost to an incumbent.
He's brash, arrogant , and very aggressive. Some say he's Ivan Boesky (Merger and Takeovers), Bill Gates, and Richard Bransome (CEO Of Virgin) rolled into one. And he deals in adult content ...read porn.
He offended many people in Japan's staid and conservative business circles.
Tokyo police raided his offices and home on Monday as there were allegations of fraudulent accounting practices which meant that his company's share price might not be all that it was supposed to be.
Panic selling ensued on Tuesday. The Tokyo Stock Exchange limits share price fall to 100 yen per day. On wednesday sell offers were all there were. The Market was in chaos. The Tokyo Stock exchange had to shut down early for FIRST TIME EVER, as the sell-off gave the TSE more activity than it could safely handle. Hence it closed.
Given that the price of the Japanese shares plummeted, our own markets here in the states were also impacted.
