Looks as plausible as anything else I've seen. If genuine, one can only hope that the familiar icon dock on the desktop and iMac-like row of ports on back means that the 'iPad' has more in common with an actual Mac running OSX than with the iPhone. Perhaps it'll run BOTH OSX programs AND iPhone apps? ;) Of course... the commercial *could*  be a fake: the front/top half of a MacBook Air and the back of an iMac. Whatever it turns out to be, it'll surely make a splash and we'll all probably know this Wednesday.

Popular Mechanics had a glowing article on this device. They sounded like a pack of women at Nordstrom's shoe department when the newest Jimmy Choos are being sold. They said it was a Home Run.

That tablet would make any publisher of paper-based magazines slobber over themselves. It would give them such a good way to engage their subscribers and would allow them to have greater control over their content than ever. I don't blame them for being so enthusiastic.

So it's confirmed: the Apple tablet's name is the Apple iPad.

This Week in Tech is providing a live videostream of the announcement here, and Engadget and Gizmodo are liveblogging it as well.

iPad?  Sounds like a woman's panty liner.

I apologize in advance if I post duplicate pictures in any of the picture threads I deal in.  My MO in getting pictures of one girl is to rip her Instagram.  That ends up with me having up to 2000 pics of her.  I've tried almost half a dozen duplicate finder programs, and none of them find all of the duplicates I inevitably end up with.

OK, it's been a busy day and I've only seen a smattering of info since Jobs' 10am presentation in SF. So the iPad seems to be an iPhone/eBook reader... which is fine. And for $499. to start, it's actually fairly well-priced for an Apple offering (yes, I know the biggest-RAM 3G-enabled version is more). Given that the upper-end big-name versions of most eBook readers (from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, etc...) are generally within a couple hundred dollars of a base iPad, and that they're mostly just monochrome 'digital ink' display devices, not having a 140,000 app library of tools on which to draw, the iPad is probably going to attract a fair number of buyers. I don't expect it to rival the iPhone or iPod for sheer numbers however, since it IS essentially a special-interest device: at some point in the future EVERYONE will get their printed matter subscriptions electronically... using iPads and similar devices. However, the transition to that future is sure to be a gradual one.

A nice device from my very initial impression, but it would have to run OSX and Mac apps for me to lust after it. ;)

I think it's fairly obvious that Apple has no high-ranking female engineers, otherwise one of them would have warned them about this. I also think it's obvious that they never really watched MADtv when it was on the air:

There's a lot of feedback from the presentation.

Overall, the iPad has some good points, but it also has a lot against it. DRM? No USB ports? No multitasking? No Flash? No webcam? No standard-sized SIM card? No way to increase memory? No thanks, at least for now. Maybe when someone jailbreaks it or something :)

Am I the only one who gets uneasy about media events like this, where they go crazy over the latest "revolutionary" tech toy?

Time for Apple to get off the "i" theme.

The iPad is trying to be a better Kindle than a Kindle, whereas I and many others hoped that it would be a true OS X-based tablet Mac computer, and not just an overgrown iPod Touch. Maybe next time.

Assuming you haven't already done so, you can watch the Apple iPad keynote announcement at Apple.com, or to save time you can watch it condensed to just over 3 minutes here. And of course, unless der Führer has weighed in on something, it didn't happen.
