.... you tell the k1ds gas cost $0.22 a gallon when you worked at an Esso in Houston when you were in High School and they aren't sure to believe you or shake their head at you.  ;D ( and we checked your oil, your tires, clean your windshield, etc, etc and they were actually SERVICE stations ).

... you actually use pen and paper and do math the way you were taught in primary school and the young ones look quizically as they take out their cell phones to do the same because they don't know how to do it longhand.   :(

[curmudgeon] It's not that they don't know how to do it 'longhand' ...they don't know how to do it at all. They only know how to use a device to find out the answer. Lord help 'em if they ever need an answer and don't have a fresh set of batteries or a PC. ;) [/curmudgeon]

... ( and we checked your oil, your tires, clean your windshield, etc, etc and they were actually SERVICE stations ).

[curmudgeon] Wanna really confound them whippersnappers? Ask 'em to change a flat tire or do an oil change themselves. In fact, just show them a filter wrench and just ask 'em to tell you what it is! ;)[/curmudgeon]

That's so very sad.

When I was a young pup one of the things my daddy taught me ( I was about 5 years old ) was how to change a tire since there used to be a lot of flat tires then. It was also fun to work on the car and help him change oil and do normal maintenance. You only went to the mechanic if the problem was really serious. Filter wrench ? In a pinch we could use a belt and take off the filter  ;D. My father always said any man should know how to mantain a car. How quaint.

A man should be able to change a **39**, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.

Though this list could perhaps be updated a bit, that really wouldn't make it any more complete than it already is. You get the gist. ;)

I still rely on ramming a screwdriver through the old filter and using it as a handle to remove the extra-stubborn ones. ;)

Factoring binomials was as far as I ever got.

Give them an oil can spout and see if they can figure out what it is.  ;)

This is the first time where a presidential or VP candidate is younger than me.  :-\
