I live less than ten minutes away from the hospital where the procedure will be done. I understand that I shouldn't drive myself, but a taxi? Heck, at that distance, there's not enough time for anything to happen.

I wonder if that "cleaning fluid" mixes well with rum.... :D

If you're getting general anesthesia, then depending on what drugs they give you, it's likely that you won't have any short-term memory for the first hour after the procedure. People will tell you things, and you will forget them a few seconds later. Not a good condition in which to try to drive a car. Make sure you only pay the cab driver once.

I wonder if I can use a Home Health Care / Nursing service for the day. I'll make a few calls.

If it's just a simple colonoscopy, you shouldn't need home care afterwards; just a ride to and from the doctor's. About an hour after the procedure, your memory should be working normally again, and you should feel fine. You'll be very hungry, though.

They'll probably suggest that you don't drive or pilot an airline for the rest of the day because the anesthesia may leave you a little loopy. Other than that, though, you'll probably feel very normal.

I agree with gonZo. When I've had it done, I get a ride home and usually knock off for a few hours. **82** is never a bad thing, but it's not like you're in bad shape as the anesthesia wears off. The only issue you may have is if a pylop was removed, in which case there may be a little bit of pain. It's not serious, but it's a good idea not to think too much about your next **107**, either.
Someday, chi1dren, this entire fuck-up will be yours.

I *am* taking the day off from work. But you would think that these home health care services (that say they help their clients get to and from doctor's appointments as well as handling other miscellaneous errands) would be agreeable to providing a ride home.

So far, 0-for-3....

Well, I came through with a Clean Bill of Health!

The cleansing process was tough. Having to make sure you took the dose of cleaning fluid PRECISELY every 20 minutes. Chilled, it tasted OK. It was the texture that was revolting. The worst one was the third from the last, because at that point I couldn't wait to be done... and there was still more than one to go!

Came out of it right on schedule - a tip of the hat to the anesthesiologist! A little over an hour of sedation; I knew nothing and felt nothing. One minute I'm in the endoscopy room getting moved into position, the next minute I'm opening my eyes in recovery....

Oh, I did get a picture. Strange things going on inside me:

I started to google for a cap of Katie Couric's colon when by chance I happened to stumble across this, which seemed worth posting instead:

Even if she worked for Everything Butt/Kink.com you'd probably not see this much of Katie Couric:

I got it done a few years ago.  I live in the US now but had the procedure outside the US (in my country of birth) because I had a high deductible insurance plan and getting it done in the US would have cost me over $2000 out of pocket, instead of about $300 in my original country (without insurance).  And I didn't like that they routinely use so much anesthetic in the US to knock you out.  I don't want to be **91** for any medical procedure unless it's absolutely necessary.  I've also read that colonoscopy is safer when you're awake, because if the probe starts to push against the intestinal wall too hard the patient will react, alerting the doctor to adjust to avoid perforating the colon.

Where I got it done, they only give me a mild sedative and didn't use an anesthesiologist, and I remained semi-awake throughout the procedure, able to watch what was happening on the screen.
