A few days ago Pal posted a picture which was from the "Admiral Krag" collection, which reminded me of a time long ago* when Admiral Krag ruled the world of internet porn, and I got to wondering what became of the Admiral. I didn't see much of his stuff; my first real dip into internet porn was in the old "newsgroups" which technically still exist, but greatly diminished.

That got me to thinking about a few other sites, like the vastly entertaining and short-lived King Tit's Tomb, or the always-disappointing Captain Liberal's Big Tit Archive.

So what are your recollections as elements of our culture fade into history?

Yes.

I was 12 or 13 when I first got to play with a computer (an Apple ][ owned by an archetypal techy uncle... he was into ham radio before computers were available and he's the guy who first taught me how to solder) and was promptly inspired to get a summer job and bought one as soon as I could (a ][+ was the current model by the time I saved up enough money). With a Hayes 300 baud external modem (remember those? I still have a matching Hayes external chronograph) that I later replaced with a Novation Applecat modem (best modem ever!) wandering the net really was going where (very few) men had gone before. So many nights spent in front of the glowing green phosphor of a monochrome, 40 (later 80) column display (later replaced with an awesome Taxan RGB monitor that could render 80 column text in color! )... just exploring and meeting people and learning things (at that age, I soaked up and retained info like a sponge).

This was more than a decade before the first websites came online... almost nobody had a computer, knew what a modem was (other than what they saw in the movie Wargames) or was even vaguely interested in any of that stuff. BUT there were lots of BBS systems, and getting into VAX/VMS systems (and other large/shared machines/networks) wasn't difficult ..the idea of online security had yet to fully develop in most places. I participated with a group of like-minded individuals in all sorts of relatively harmless mischief, and am even credited by name (my first online pseudonym) as a contributor to the creation of a well-known piece of phone phreaking software (this was back when people used numeric codes to use their MCI/etc... long distance telephone services). Ah... memories!

It was fun. Though I don't have an Apple ][+ anymore, I do have a few hundred 5.25" floppies in a small metal filing cabinet in my garage... chocked full of software and data from the early 'net. One of these days, I'd like to get/set up a //e and take a trip down memory lane.

Edited later to attach a stock pic of a Hayes Chronograph... basically a digital clock/calendar that provided the date/time to early computers via an RS-232 serial interface.

One of the first real "archive" sites I found was myarchives.com, around 1998. It was pretty poorly organized and fairly small. Around 2000 it went offline for upgrading, and came back as myarchives.net much better organized, and invited members to add what they had of models prior to 1980, later changed by the addition of a 1980s section. It became the largest collection of vintage porn on the Net, organized by decade and model name.

In mid-2012 without notice it shut down, leaving only a note that it was being reorganized and would be back soon.

About the same time as Rusty-N-Edie's was another great BBS - The Chicago Loop BBS.   I think it had the same fate as Rusty-N-Edie's...

And we also can't forget Anthony Cotto's FTP site...
