What I've found out myself:
*.gif -files up to a
max. pixel WIDTH of 125 pix
and a
max. pixel HEIGHT of 125 pix

or (for 3:4 avatars)

max. pixel WIDTH of 92 pix
and a
max. pixel HEIGHT of 125 pix
are appropriate to be displayed animated

...  avoid mistakes when setting up a new poll

polls behave in some points different from threads:

What is identical?
- once started you cannot remove the poll (well, besides you are a modeator ).
  So a new poll behaves like a new thread.
- you must add at least one post to the poll, however you cannot remove it..
- any added post behaves like any added post to a thread.
- posts are visible to anyone like any other posts.

What is different?
- the ballot card is not visible to non-logged-in users (lurkers).
  in this point the ballot card section behaves like an attached picture.
- you can modify the ballot card ("voting booth") even beyond the 24 hour period if you are the owner
  of the poll (started the poll).
- however you cannot change the voting procedure (number of votes etc).
- you can even remove the ballot card completely, thus leaving a headless (and therefore
  meaningless) body of posts. So be careful!

What is unique?
- the voting options may contain any formatting and functional (e.g. picture embedding etc.) fearures you can use
  in any post.
