An elaborate naval war game is getting played.  Perhaps a serious war (with China?) is brewing and a lot depends on this game.  But, wouldn't you know it, some sort of alien artificial intelligence grabs hold of half the game and its commander, basically an Admiral Now-Bad leading the fake-Chinese way too seriously.  Realizing that everything has gone seriously wrong, an Admiral Always-Good desperately sets off some sort of Philadelphia Experiment techno-bullshit device, let's call it a Screen, a barrier which renders the opposing fleets respectively invisible, if only to buy time.  For some reason all ships, both "ours" and "theirs," need to be arranged tightly along lines of latitude and longitude.  From that point on the two Admirals are stuck hurling missiles at each other with simple letter-and-number coordinates, trying to psych out the positions of the opposing ships.  (Once this is all over, all the "fake-Chinese" sailors would get miraculously rescued and deprogrammed.)

Druul, I'm sure you are familiar with the War College problem of the Vietnam War--Starting in 1965 every session war-gamed Vietnam, but the "wrong" people kept winning, no matter how they rigged the game, until they started using off-the-chart rigging, like Russia changing sides.
Someday, chi1dren, this entire fuck-up will be yours.

A Cabin in the Woods -
I went to this not realizing it was Joss Whedon's work, but within 30 minutes, I became sure he had his hands in it. Classic Whedon goodness. And it really exceeded all expectations. It's a horror movie, with comedy, which doesn't detract from the scariness, but is really witty comedy (love you Joss). And then there's an organization reminiscent of Wolfram & Heart, Amy Acker, mind**** plot twists, and a larger than life perfect ending. It was the first time all year so far, that I felt like I got more than I paid for (at $10 a head).
And if you liked BuffyTVS, this movie goes from recommended to absolute must-see.

I second this.  If you like Whedon humor, and you like horror movies .. this is a must see (and avoid spoilers)

Marvels' The Avengers - 10/10

Possibly my favorite Marvel comics movie, totally excellent and have seen it five times, damn.

Dark Shadows - 9/10

Not the best Tim Burton/Johnny Depp/Danny Elfman film (their best would be 'Sleepy Hollow'), but still good and funny, and i enjoyed it a lot.

Men In Black 3 - 10/10

I think this is as good as the first 'Men In Black' and a lot better than 'Men In Black 2'.  I like all three Men In Black films.  I think they should probably end it with the 'Men In Black 3', but if they do more, I would be quite interested in seeing it.

Prometheus - 0/10

Yes, that is a Zero out of Ten!

I like all the Alien movies ('Alien', 'Aliens', 'Alien 3', and 'Alien Resurrection'), but I do not consider this one one of them.  I thought 'Aliens VS Predator - Requiem' (Though AVP 2 had so much potential, with the Predalien, so underused and you could barely see it or anything else in the movie, way to keep the budget down) was bad, this was worse.  I enjoyed 'Alien VS Predator'.  'Prometheus' totally ruined the Space Jockeys.  In 'Alien', the space jockey you see with the whole in its' chest, I always thought the space jockey looked as it did in the movie, not that it was wearing a mask.  To find out they look like a grown up baby, looks fucking ridiculous.  I was looking forward to this, what a huge let down.  Why at the end was she running towards the ship crashing on the ground? Idiot, I thought the characters in AVP 2 were stupid, but the characters in 'Prometheus' were stupid too.  Also, the beginning with the stupid looking grown up baby engineer, why the hell was he surprised what was happening to him?  Also, that scene was getting praise for the effects, I thought it looked quite fake.  I was not interested in a prequel (if you can call it that.  I did not want all the background to the space jockeys, keeping it a mystery was part of the creepy factor, now it is totally screwed up), I always wanted Sigourney Weaver to come back to do a Alien 5, with lots of Xenomorphs.  I am still waiting for Alien 5.  As for Prometheus.....well it was pure shit and the supposed alien at the end was pathetic looking.  There were way to many inconsistencies in this film to be connected to the true Alien films and the spin offs.  One of them being there was no Lance Henrikson to play Charles Bishop Weyland, the founder of Weyland Corp.  He is Weyland, and yet they have Guy Pearce play a different named Weyland.  To me, there are still only 4 Alien movies, and two spin off Alien movies with the Predators and there are three Predator movies.  I still want a true Alien 5, with Sigourney Weaver as Ripley back.

I would rank the Alien and Predator and Alien VS Predator movies like this-

Alien - 10/10
Aliens - 10/10
Alien 3 - 10/10
Alien Resurrection - 8/10

Predator - 10/10
Predator 2 -10/10 (Underrated)
Predators - 10/10 (totally underrated)

Alien VS Predator - 9/10
Aliens VS Predator - Requiem - 5/10

Also saw,

The Pirates - Band Of Misfits - 10/10

I like these type of movies, the stop motion.  Liked Wallace And Gromit - Curse Of The Were-Rabbit, The Nightmare Before Christmas, The Corpse Bride, Chicken Run.  This movie is a nice addition to the stop motion films.  I hope they do more.

Just saw a TV spot for "Total Recall".

They've got to be really desperate when they are remaking a movie that is only 22 years old....

I agree, but I am making the exception for this one because it looks cool.  It could be total trash, but I think I will see it.

The 1990 original I never liked, mainly because the ending was so damn laughable.  Arnold's character and the lady and both dying because of no air and the acting was so terrible at that part.  There were other things I did not like in the film, but that was the major part.

What pisses me off is jj abraham's hack take on star trek.  Leave the original characters alone, they had an awesome ending in Star trek 6 and Kirk for Star Trek Generations.  Paramount should have made another TNG movie, the original crew got Star Trek 6 after the crap fest of Star Trek 5, so TNG should have had another movie or two after Nemesis.  Either that or go on to DS9 movies, Voyager movies or Enterprise movies or just make up a new crew.

They're just eager to show the advances in special-effects technology, embodied by the more-convincingly-rendered triple-breasted **33**.   ;)

Okay, I just made that up...except the part about the triple-breasted **33**, from what I've read and seen she's confirmed to be in the movie.  However, having learned from "Pluto Nash" that a single good boob scene does not merit spending full theater price, I think I'll be happy to wait until this remake hits the video-rental/streaming circuit before watching.

I didn't mind the Abrams Star Trek movie, because its only tie to the originals was Leonard Nimoy, and it was made abundantly clear that everything within that film was an alternate timeline to the "established" one.  There's room in my head-canon to accommodate and enjoy it simultaneously with the source material...it's something I've just grown used to with every movie and TV show (both animated and live-action) that uses comic books as their source material.  That's not to say that it was without flaws, but I really did enjoy the experience.
be seeing you...

Beetlejuice - 10/10

Have always liked this film.  It is funny and cleverly made.  There is talk of a sequel.  I hope Tim Burton will direct it, Danny Elfman do the music and Michael Keaton back as Beetlejuice, because there is no point to a sequel without the originals involved.

Dark City (1998) -10/10

Such an underrated movie.  Saw it when it first came out.  It was originally suppose to come out in fall 1997.  It may have done better if it came out then and was heavily advertised more.  Also maybe if it was PG-13.  Because compared to movies now, this film is tame in the violence/nudity department.  There is no swearing.  Instead of the woman at the beginning saying 'Shit', she says 'Shoot'.  There is a heavy feel of noir in the film and a awesome gothic look.  The special effects are awesome (the dream sequences, the buildings changing shapes and the whole surroundings changing and morphing), even today, they look better than Inception, the movie that seems to have ripped-off Dark City heavily, especially seeing as David Goyer was involved with both.  Such an underrated piece of classic celluloid.

Star Trek VI - The Undiscovered Country - 10/10

A brilliant ending to the original crew of Star Trek, or rather Star Trek - The Original Series.  I hate that Paramount pictures has let a hack job, a so called director (jj abrahams) remake (yeah I know it was an alternate universe, but since when is an alternate universe an actuality of how the Enterprise came to be??!  It never has been an actuality!  It is a damn remake and nothing more) the series.  Star Trek VI - The Undiscovered Country bridges the space and connection between Star Trek - The Original Series and Star Trek - The Next Generation.  It explains how the Federation and the Klingons formed peace with each other.  Commander Worf's grand father is in the film as Colonel Worf and played by the same person, the awesome Micheal Dorn.  Kirk, Checov and Scotty return in the equally awesome Star Trek - Generations.  Star Trek VI - The Undiscovered Country is an underrated picture.  If they were to re-release Star Trek VI - The Undiscovered Country (which I damn well know they won't) in movie theaters, I would so see it again in theaters!  I always thought Star Trek VI - The Undiscovered Country was and is far superior to Star Trek II - The Wrath Of Khan!!!!!

I think the triple breasted woman is in it.  Because in a tv ad for the remake, this woman stares at Colin and says 'Too bad you do not have a third hand.'

As to the star trek remake.  You may enjoy it, I did not for many reasons.  But it just means (like the pathetic Prometheus making it more of a problem for their to be an Alien 5)) that there is not going to be a proper Star Trek 11th film (or another Star Trek series, I would like Star Trek - Enterprise to get another season), whether it be a TNG film, DS9 film, Voyager films or Enterprise film, or how about a completely new crew and ship if none of the previously mentioned are going to be used.

Coming Soon... (hopefully, the American theatrical release is still being negotiated)

IRON SKY

From the people that brought you "Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning".

In the waning days of WWII, the Nazis took all their technological research and ran away to a base on the far side of the moon. Now (2018 in the movie) they're coming back to take over the world!!!

This looks to be of the "so-bad-it's-good" quality.  Another one for the catch-it-on-video stack.  Hopefully it'll make its way to SciFi's Saturday movie night, because no matter how ridiculous it might be, it'll be a zillion times better than their usual dreck.
be seeing you...
