IMHO, to state that an artist like Michael Jackson is a marketing ploy and not about music is positively and profoundly ridiculous!

I will not get into a flame war, pissing contest nor a tete-a-tete over this but a statement like that cannot go unchallenged.

As far as the current state of music, the only title I would purchase in the current BILLBOARD Top 20 CD chart is the "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" soundtrack.

---------- "I will be acquitted and vindicated when the truth is told." Michael Jackson before the trial------------
---------- "Justice was done. He was always innocent and we proved it." Thomas Mesereau after the trial-------

Hey there!

Turbo, I think that the problem is that artists like mikey and madonna used to be all about the music and they may feel they still are but now they have become just a marketing machine gimick.

creed? rock? they are the whitesnake of this decade. they are pop. and pop is crap. has been for the last 10 years. if you want rock try "weezer", "tool", "system of a down" or "radiohead". if its popular chances are its pap which rhymes with crap and thats what it smells like.

My thing with the Micheal Jacksons and Madonna's of the music biz is everything they do revolves around publicity... they are so incredibly commercial that regardless of what music they put out, I can't take it seriously. I don't want my favorite musical artists selling me a product that isn' their music.

I don't consider how good you can dance music...

I don't consider selling me a Pepsi music..

I don't consider publicity stunts music....

My whole point here is this.. I like other things besides rock.. but I don't indulge in artists who partake in the things these pop icons do.

I don't know a single person to this day who owns a Micheal album besides Thriller.. do you?

If these artists put half as much effort into their music as they do the products they endorse, what they wear, and determining what TV spots they want to be part of maybe the musical world wouldn't be half as stale and sick as it is today.

Wait, there are still record executives... so the chance of that ever happening is nil.

There's probably a guy two houses down from you writing music that's far better than what you listen to... but you'll never know because it's not shoved into your face daily.

actually i own 3 MJ albums; "Off the Wall" is the best of his work;I only got Thriller b/c well it was requested..a lot... when i DJ'd parties (and still is).

but you are right the commercial aspect of music and the whole marketing machine behind it has ruined a kit of what rock or rap or alternative music has/is supposed to be about.

That said I had real high hopes for something like Napster and P2P b/c while it may initially ruin the dreams of rock stars and record labels I think it would have been great for music; if only to keep down the number of julio inglesias Jr.s and elevate the number of billy joels or chuck D's

anyhoo, what we have for MASS music is crap now. but there IS good music you just have to look for it.

As far as the music debate goes:
Zamfir, Master of the Panflute.  Nuff said.

Now, returning to the orginal thread, the reason some people saw her ass and some didn't is that there are 2 versions of that commerical.  A 90 second (ass 'o plenty), and a 30 second (ass-less).  So if you saw the commerical but didn't see her ass you probably saw the 30 second spot,  which is pretty much all they're running since the Superbowl is over.  Intrestingly enough, Tivo checked the viewing habits of 10000 of its subscribers duing the Superbowl and they say that the commericals were repeated more than the game and the two Pepsi ads were repeated more then the rest of the commericals.  Even the 30 second spot. Takes all kinds I guess.

Actually I forgot about Weezer—they're alright with me (as if that means much).  What's interesting is the producer of a few of their albums is Rick Okazek—a former member of The Cars.  I suppose that explains a few things about Weezer.

In regards to Britney's ads, i didn't see all of them, but i like that Marilyn Monroe type look she was trying to pull off. I like her music, though i prefer rock, i watch her because she likes to perform. The fact that she acts like a freak on stage might have something to do with that. Is her music children's music? Obviously not! For proof, see lyrics below.

BRITNEY SPEARS LYRICS
"I'm A Slave 4 U"
I know I may be young, but I've got feelings too.
And I need to do what I feel like doing.
So let me go and just listen.
All you people look at me like I'm a little girl.
Well did you ever think it be okay for me to step into this world.
Always saying little girl don't step into the club.
Well I'm just tryin' to find out why cause dancing's what I love.
Get it get it, get it get it (WHOOOA)
Get it get it, get it get it (WHOOOOOA) (Do you like it)
Get it get it, get it get it (OOOHHHH) (This feels good)
I know I may come off quiet, I may come off shy.
But I feel like talking, feel like dancing when I see this guy.
What's practical is logical. What the hell, who cares?
All I know is I'm so happy when you're dancing there.
I'm a slave for you. I cannot hold it; I cannot control it.
I'm a slave for you. I won't deny it; I'm not trying to hide it.
Baby, don't you wanna, dance upon me,
(I just wanna dance next to you)
To another time and place.
Baby, don't you wanna, dance upon me,
(Are you ready)
Leaving behind my name, my age.
(Lets go)
(Like that)
(You like it)
(Now watch me)
Get it get it, get it get it (WHOOOA)
Get it get it, get it get it (WHOOOOOA)
Get it get it, get it get it (OOOHHHH)
(Panting)
I really wanna dance, tonight with you.
(I just can't help myself)
I really wanna do what you want me to.
(I just feel I let myself go)
I really wanna dance, tonight with you.
(Wanna see you move)
I really wanna do what you want me to.
(Uh Uh Uh)
Baby, don't you wanna, dance upon me,
(I just wanna dance next to you)
To another time and place.
Baby, don't you wanna, dance upon me,
(Are you ready)
Leaving behind my name, my age.
I'm a slave for you. (Take that) I cannot hold it; I cannot control it.
I'm a slave (It just feels right) for you. (It just feels good)
I won't deny it; I'm not trying to hide it. (Baby)
Get it get it, get it get it (WHOOOA)
Get it get it, get it get it (WHOOOOOA)
Get it get it, get it get it (OOOHHHH)
(Panting)
Get it get it, get it get it (WHOOOA)
Get it get it, get it get it (WHOOOOOA)
Get it get it, get it get it (OOOHHHH)
(Panting)
I'm a slave for you. (Here we go now)
I cannot hold it; I cannot control it.
I'm a slave for you. (Here we go) I won't deny it, (Yeah)
I'm not trying to hide it.
(Like that)

Actually, those lyrics read like they're endorsing **43**...

Puddle of Mudd does that just fine. Britney is just like every other form of pop music that's ever existed, but now the corporations have it really well marketed for maximum profit.

That is one of the most disgusting songs I've ever heard. It totally demeans her and she doesn't even know it. It's just as mysoginistic as Eminiem on a bad day.

And those aren't "her" lyrics. Some fuck in Sweden writes them.
