See, it is HARD to find someone you believe to be genuinely sexy and then qualify that appraisal with the word 'strangely' no matter how far from mainstream 'standards' that person happens to be. ED seems like she'd make a good girlfriend... cute, casual, self-effacing and reasonably funny.

So, come on... there must be some women who are 'out there' (perhaps not quite as far out there as Madeline Albright or Janet Reno, but if so, so be it) enough to qualify. Of course, should any of our female members wish to suggest male nominees for the list, by all means let's hear it.


Lauren Hutton is still sexy, but there's nothing strange about it.

Liza Minelli and Liz Taylor I don't personally find much more appealing than Albright/Reno (sorry Liz, JMHO).

Yoko Ono is sort of strangely sexy I think (present day). Who else dammit, WHO ELSE?

Rosanne Barr? Maybe. Dyan Cannon? Yes, but like Lauren Hutton her sexiness is hardly strange regardless of her age. The frumpish, middle-aged librarian with the thick glasses and less-than-perfect posture at my local branch of the LAPL? Definitely, but she's hardly a common point of reference.

All right, I'm going to attempt some zeroing in:

Alberta Watson.  A bit infamous as the object of [censored] in Spanking the Monkey, she was honorably hot back in The Keep and was a sympathetic mom in Hackers (Angelina Jolie's break) and a mother figure in the series La Femme Nikita.

Emma Thompson.  Generally strong, smart, witty.

Thora Birch.  A supreme sympathetic nerd in Ghost World.

Mary Steenburgen.  A bit spinsterish, yet a charming seducer of time traveller H. G. Wells in Time After Time -- not to mention time traveller Doc Brown in Back to the Future III.  What is it about her and time travel anyway?

I never thought of Barbara Stanwyck much as an outright sex symbol in a comedy like The Lady Eve or a noir classic like Double Indemnity -- yet there was a mrrraow factor to her matriarchal role in The Big Valley.

Kathy Baker.  Holly Marie Combs, even before Charmed, was hot as the daughter on Picket Fences -- but so was the mom, in a way that showcased more integrity than glamor.

Amy Madigan.  Sort of a feistier Kathy Baker.  She actually gets to play an action heroine in an overlooked little movie called Nowhere to Hide.

Eartha Kitt.  Her insistence on being an ageless sex goddess in the movie Boomerang is both hilarious and disturbingly effective.

Wives Worth Fighting to Get Back To: Bonnie Bedelia and Anne Archer.  A truly prize MILF, however, is Cindy Pickett: always cast as just a mom, a waste of woman.

(I'm on the bench with Judi Dench.  Thoroughly charming and inspiring -- but would I do her?  Hmmm ... )

Kate Mulgrew.  Would that I could tap her wrist the way Joel Grey does in Remo Williams.

All good suggestions on your part... can't believe that I didn't think of those. However, like some of the women I suggested (and on that list) some of the ones you listed are simply sexy, without any strangeness about it.

I mean: Thora Birch, Ann Archer, Amy Madigan, Alberta Watson (who I met once in London during "Spanking the Monkey" at a film festival... she's even sexier in person) are all simply extremely desirable, period. The only kind of fellow that would consider their appeal to be truly out of the ordinary would be someone who was so brainwashed by media to consider anything other than Pam Anderson clones to be unacceptable.

Cindy Pickett I'm not familiar with, but I assume that she's tasty from your description.

See, Judy Densch (your spelling is probably correct, I'm just too lazy to check) would be a better example of strangely sexy... can a 20-50 year old heterosexual male find her physically arousing? I think so, maybe... My lack of imagination is keeping me from coming up with any more good candidates OTHER than those who might be on the fringes of desirability due to the age difference.

Helen Mirren, Kate Mulgrew, Emma Thompson.... again all delightfully fuckable-looking (and I mean that in the most respectful way possible ).

Also re: Sandra Berhardt... haven't seen her lately (she barely made the B-list of celebs, and most of that was via her friendship w/Madonna) but as I recall (from the King of Comedy mostly) she had a certain desirable quality despite her abrasive personality, skinny figure and scowling expression. I don't think it'd take too many shots (of alcohol) to make that a possibility.

Lee Grant.  Long after a heyday round about Shampoo, she turns up again in Defending Your Life.

Virginia Hey.  The briefly glimpsed Amazon Woman way back in The Road Warrior, she became the blueskinned spiritual Zhaan on Farscape.  Which reminds me: I think "Mira Furlan" is the name of the woman who played Delenn on Babylon 5.

Janet Leigh, who turned down Gus Van Sant's Psycho reshoot to do Halloween H20 with daughter Jamie Lee Curtis -- probably just to turn down Van Sant.

Likewise, veteran Carroll Baker turns up as Michael Douglas's housekeeper in The Game.
