Recent Site Slowing Down.
« on: March 05, 2002, 12:24:00 PM »
Hi everyone this weekend was running very slow due to the fact that someone leaked a password to one of the large password sites.

So as the leeched hammered at the doors for the stuff that belongs to the people who pay, they sucked the bandwidth down to nothing.  We found the pass and have disabled it.

Not sure what to do about that in the future besides banning the leaked persons isp.

You may decide to look into limiting sessions somehow.  It may not stop people sharing accounts, but you may be able to halt the account rushes that occurred...

You might make it TO the door, but once you squeeze the handle, you'll pass out.

Good call! I'll pass that along to the sysadmin tonight.

It still seems to be a problem, I just waited 5 minutes for the thumbs on page one of the ugallery to load... I eventually gave up.

oops, wait a minute. It may be on my end. I am running Direct Connect on another box and have been getting hammered real hard for a couple of days... I should look at that WAN ACT light once in a while, I guess.

you can't limit each login/password to only one connection?

Threaten the offender with a virus that limits his or her computer to displaying images of women with no larger than an A-Cup **evil grin**.

In all seriousness, it wouldn't be terribly difficult to write something that checks the logs every hour or so and watches for users that make more than, say, 30 requests a second.

Don't know about anybody else, but _I_ certainly can't click that fast   .

Cheers,

It may be the sysadmin can do something similar to what you often see on banking sites.  Try logging in (if you have access to online banking, if not, play along in your head) then open another browser window and try logging in again.  If it's been designed properly, the cgi script that processed your login won't let you log in again until either your session times out or you log out of the site.  I'm sure there's something that can be done without hurting the paying customers.

Good Luck...

Oh hell no, anything but that.

As I type right now, I have nine windows open, all loading differant forum messages and images (I have a 56k Modem, This way I can read one thing while the rest of the world loads) This may only be me (although I doubt it) but only having one window open to the BEA would slow down my access to it to the point where I either find a way around it, or fuck off somewhere I can surf quicker.

Imaginos, are you meaning to tell me that more than one IP can access member content on a single account concurrently?  What the hell... At this point I don't care how the administrator handles it, get that keyboard-totin' trooper to whip something--anything.
