Has the Google backlash finally begun?
« on: August 27, 2005, 07:34:22 AM »
The New York Times has published an article slamming Google. Apparently, some people are thinking that they are becoming too big for their britches. I guess all is not sweetness and light for the Brothers Brin.

The article is titled: "Relax, Bill, It's Google's Turn as the Villian", and can be found here .

Not a big deal, IMHO.  It's mostly a boo-hoo fest that SV companies can no longer find good talent for cheap.  It's pushing up the market value for folks such as myself (and I'm not even in the SV area anymore).  Another unrelated factor is the fact that the tech sector is now experiencing the departure of baby boomers.  I'd read another article some 2-3 years ago which predicted the growing demand (and pricetag) for experienced IT folks.  Add into that the fact that fewer [censored] are enrolling in maths or comp sci in university, and you have quite the strong formula.  The article was based on a demographic study, so it wasn't just rabble rousing.  Get set folks, the dot com boom will seem like a walk in the park in comparison.  Yes, even with the outsourcing to India.

And the fact that Google is non-traditional, and anyone seen to do things non-traditionally are written off at first as being doomed to failure, and when they prove that it works, others are forced to scramble to redesign themselves or fade into non-existence.  In Google's marketplace, there are very few to compete.  And they're innovators.  (Check out Google Maps or Google Suggest, which use AJAX, something which wasn't being used all that much.)

Bottom line?

I for one welcome our new web search overlords.

There won't be much of a backlash.  People will just start using some other search engine if it comes down to it.  Anyone can start one.  Google started in a garage with a couple of PC's when Altavista and Yahoo were already huge.  Google had better search and ranking algorithms.  Yahoo itself started out running on a Pentium 120 in a dormroom.

Simple fact with the computer age: When something becomes popular and makes lots of money, it is considered evil and should be avoided.

True. Go back a couple of decades and read all the smug stories on how the "heroic" Gates and his small company Microsoft defeated the "Evil Big Blue"...

The thing is people CHOOSE to use Google and they don't pay for it.  It's not like you can buy a laptop these days at Circuit City and ask to have Linux installed over Windows.

But of course now that Google Plus has infected YouTube comments and thereby totally borked a perfectly-good commenting system...

And just now, Larry Page announced that Google is being folded under a new parent company called Alphabet. Larry & Sergey remain head of Alphabet, and Sundar Pichai becomes CEO of Google.

Weird.

I use Google less and less these days. I actually now, prefer Bing, especially for images.

When I do use Google Images, I make sure that I do it in an Incognito window, and/or I do it when I am logged out of any Google service. Bing Images works very very well these days. I remember when they first started out, they were pretty meh, but now?
