When I was stationed in San Diego at the submarine base in Point Loma, across the water channel was the North Field Naval air base where the Aircraft Carriers would dock and not only F-14 Tomcats would take off from the airfield, so did the A-6 Intruders and good lord, they were both very loud since their engines did not have anything to make them quieter like civilian aircraft.

That would be NAS North Island

That is what it was called when I was there starting in 1980

F-14 squadrons were at Miramar and A-6's were up at Lemoore

North Island had primarily ASW aircraft   S-3's and SH-2 and Sh-3  helos 

I am not saying that F-14's and A-6's never flew out of North Island but it was a very rare event   

The "Navy One" S-3 that GWB flew in was from a squadron at North Island 

BTW they were within easy "Marine One " helo range there were shots wher you could see Point Loma in the background

You are right. Back in the 1970's when I was first stationed in San Diego, there were people calling it North Field and in 1979, I was transferred to Pear Harbor, Hawaii and years later I did go back  to San Diego and the F-14 and A-6 did fly mostly out of Miramar in North San Diego and that was the main Base which was part of the Top Gun movie.
