The day dawned overcast with rain threatening, but King Neptune (Lucky Diamond Rich) ordered the rain to stay away from the Parade, and for the most part, it did. The heavens did not open up until 5 pm, well after the parade was over. During the parade there were only a few brief intervals of light sprinkles, none of which were long or heavy enough to be a problem.
Boobage was on display, of course, being led by the Queen, longtime mermaid Bambi the Mermaid.
I think the weather may have kept a lot of marchers away. The floats and costumes weren't as extravagant as they were last year.
But I did like the
Main Squeeze Orchestra, an all-girl, all-accordion band. Couldn't determine the size of their breasts, but I doubt they were large. Accordions and breasts don't mix. Also catching my eye were four young ladies who decked themselves out as Coney Island postcards, and a group calling themselves "Three Little Mermaids from School are We" decked out in Japanese finery.
The parade highlight had to have been the wedding of Joe & Jennifer, who actually did march in the Parade and got married FOR REAL at the reviewing stand.
Went to the Ball afterwards, and sprung for a VIP ticket. Had performances by Les Sans Culottes, a faux French rock band, sideshow performer Adam: The First Real Man, and burlesque babes
Creamy Stevens and Little Brooklyn.
Got to chat a bit with Dick Zigun, the man behind Coney Island's current revival. He's just been appointed to the Coney Island Development Corporation, so you know that developers are now going to have a very hard time ruining the place.
Next year's parade will be their 25th, and lots of big things are in the works.
