My setup:
I have my pc in the basement, where the Time Warner cable tv cable comes into the house, and take one of the cables off of the splitter and hook a cable directly into my ATI card, and cap directly into the pc. I need to clean out my hd, only have about a gig free at the moment.

I'm using a 1ghz Athlon, 320 megs o' ram, with an ATI All-In-Wonder Radeon card. I believe the video card is capable of up to 500 lines of resolution, don't remember for sure. If I had an empty 30+ gig drive, I could record whole movies to the hd, the ATI card comes with its own version of programmable tv software.

Um...My computer is shiney...

A pretty girl, but of course looking like that she wouldn't be eating TV dinners often. And once again, excellent vidcaps... sharp and clear. Thanks.

I'm glad you have a shiney computer, mine is looking rather bland and beige, perhaps I'll give it a good waxing; do you wax your pc? How often?

Oh, and I like The Firm infomercials also.

You do know that some PC modders paint their cases with automotive paint.  Hence in that case, waxing their cases would do quite a bit of good.

ANYTHING to get rid of that malted milk/oatmeal color that PCs come in!

I'd love to have a PC with a wood veneer case with big brass fittings (that actually say "On" and "Off"), or maybe a midnight blue lacquer with chrome trim....

Ya, I read PC Gamer, and there's some fine paint jobs on some of the PC's out there anymore.

Then again the whole automotive paint thing makes sense since a lot of car modding faire (wild paint jobs, ghost flames, neon/EL/CCT/LEDs/Blacklight, odd means of opening the unit, shaved pieces—like faceplates on CD drives, etc) seems to be coming into the PC modding scene.  Maybe I'll get a step ahead of everyone else and start chroming computer components (of course a chromed box and monitor would be difficult to take to a LAN party) since that's the way things seem to be headed.

i thought people modded their PC's specifically for LAN parties..
you know, to show off... kinda like when people race their cars...

Exactly!

It's a more or less perfect parallel.  Though people who mod their PCs don't expect 20+ Mhz out of special EIDE cables and better control by lowering the mouse with crude cutting tools (yes, you wouldn't believe what methods people use to lower their cars).

Of course hood pins would be pretty handy on most cases (of course a lot of modders are revelling in thumbscrews found on some high-end cases).

I kid around with a couple of pc buddies about "what's under the hood" of their pcs. 7200 rpm hds in raid array, the new 1066 ram, ATI 9700 vid card - dang, the thing should have headers, a blower out the top and slicks on the sides! They even put crude radiators in 'em, besides custom cooling fans, see through cases to show off the cabling, and clear coat finish. And that's just the hardware. Then there's the software . . .

In theory one could put an electric cooling unit (the sort that uses Peltier effect) directly on the processor (or in the case if you can get a strong enough cooling effect out of the unit) and then rig up a dehumidifier to take care of any condensation.  This could reduce the number of fans and maybe eventually irradicate fan usage if the cooling technology advances enough.  I think that Peltier cooling may be more feasible (once enough of the technology hits the market—in fact those cooler boxes that plug into a car cigarette lighter use Peltier cooling, so maybe disassembly of such could yield parts for computer cooling) than those sub-zero compressor based refridgerated cases.

Though I'm a Mac/Unix guy, I keep an eye on the PC world for entertainment purposes (I've subscribed to Maximum PC for ages). Anyway, I distinctly recall a couple years ago (maybe it was around the time the very first Xeon CPUs were being released) seeing some PCs in the magaizne that had their tower cases mounted on top of some kind of cooling apparatus... I gather that the cooled air was forced up into the case and exited at the top.

Personally, I prefer a computer to be as quiet as possible... luckily there are almost always some Macs in Apple's product line that are cooled only by convection and thus need no fan. I believe that the PowerPC CPUs in Macs have fewer transistors (and lower clock speeds) than Pentium or Athlon CPUS since they're RISC and not CISC designs. The noisiest thing in my computer is the hard drive, which I let spin (instead of setting it to spin down when not in use) since I dislike the delay when it has to spin up again for access.

Anyway, that gal in the Sprint commercial (my obvious attempt to bring this thread full circle) is more and more appealing to me every time I see the commercial. She's not super-model material (which is a POSTIVE factor IMHO), but her slightly acerbic character is attractive and saucy. I'd be curious to see how she looks in those silver leotards without that goofy skirt thing she's wearing in that superhero costume.
