The eternal question:

Take Jean-Luc Picard and James T. Kirk.

Both are manning a ST:TOS-era ship. Both have the crews they are used to, and Picard is given a few days to help familiarize his crew to the ship.

In a spaceship battle: who would win, and why?

Kirk will win. No question about it.

Why? Picard is a diplomat, and probably one of the best the Federation has. Kirk on the other hand is second only to Garth of Izar as the finest military commander in the galaxy.

Interesting! Is that assessment of James T. Kirk's abilities canon?

Actually, yes. Stated by Garth himself in the episode Whom Gods Destroy.

Kirk replied he considered himself primarily an explorer, but did not otherwise dispute Garth's assessment.

I stopped watching season 2 ‘cause it was just meh.  But, the stuff I’ve seen for the new season looks like a lot of fun.  Guess I’ll have to go back and force myself to watch the balance of season 2!

You know your stuff, good sir! Picard gets some points for his "Picard Maneuver" to defeat the Ferengi; a move for which Data later said "there is no defense." But then when Riker barked at Data to "make one up" (while Picard was under control of the Borg), Data was able to comprise one, but only because he knew how Picard would react.

So yeah, I get it, everyone loves Picard. I do too. Perhaps Lt. Tasha Yar said it best, "if there was someone in this universe I could choose to be like, someone who I would want to make proud of me - it's you. You who have the heart of an explorer and the soul of a poet."

So I'm okay with Picard getting the vote of ultimate captain for everything except battle tactician. That's fair.

Season 3 is finally what we all wanted Picard to be from the start.
It's a victory lap for the TNG crew. Everyone is back.

Just finished watching the second season.  Once they go back in time it’s not too bad at all, really, and I really do like how they wrapped it up.  Mind you there are tremendous logic holes in the script and one must withhold one’s disbelief far too many times, put I was still surprised that I mostly enjoyed season 2.

Can’t wait for season 3!

Speaking of Star Trek: Picard, I hear that Geordi LeForge's two daughters are on the show, one of them played by LeVar Burton's real-life daughter Mica.

I also hear that rumors are that a new spinoff of the show will prominently feature a new generation of stars from the siblings and offspring of the ST:TNG cast.

I might have to spring for Paramount+ after all.
