Congrats!  My father had his eyes done -- it's a bit disorienting, after a lifetime of almost always seeing him with thick glasses ...

Munch, Been thinking about this for years and even booked in to get it done in the UK a couple of years back but was warned off at the time by my doc friend!

Were you near or far sighted?  Painful or not?

I'm a bit short sighted and have thought about it.

But as it's not reversible, and having heard a few horror stories, I'll give it a miss.

I think it depends on how your sight is, if it's really bad than maybe its worth a go, I'm just a bit shortsighted, I don't think its worth the risk.

If it were simply a matter of zapping my eyes with lasers (assuming my eyes were bad enough to benefit from it), I could probably do it.

It's the whole "we're gonna slice your eye open with a flip-top lid, THEN zap it with a laser" that freaks me out.

Actually ... they use a spreader to separate your eyelids ... then a suction tube on your eye ... then a blade comes across slicing your eye (and temporarily blocking your already blurry vision ... then the doc peels back the flap ... flashes you with a laser that stinks of burning hair ... puts the flap back ... unsuctions your eye ... drops a contact lens bandage over top .. and tada .. you're done (well, after the spreader is removed) ...

Just thinking about that procedure gives me the creeps.  Glad it worked for you; I think I'm gonna stick with contact lenses or old-fashioned specs.

Yeah, the 'spreader' is an ocular speculum.  If you've ever seen the movie A Clockwork Orange, you know the deal.  Just getting that placed on my eyelids (holding them back) would be enough to make me a little wiggy.  Unless I was heavily sedated, of course.

I've yet to understand why they wouldn't do it with a person under a general anaesthesia.  To my knowledge, this isn't an option.

Don't they put drops in your eye so you can't see anything?  They have to do something.  People would freak out, or at least move their eye around screwing everything up.

no, they don't put drops in your eyes so you can't see .... though you are given drugs that make you loopy ... and your eyeball is suctioned into place so it won't move.
