I think that US house sales figures weren't that good this quarter, maybe this will weigh on domestic demand?

Everybody seems cautious, so I don't see any great booms soon -- which is fine by me.

At last, a month with a high that beats the highs of the two previous months.  Nine hundred points to go ...

Shara, part of what is happening is peculiar to the American economy, usually described as the Wall Street/Main Street conflict. The Wall Street economy is doing just fine, thank you. Wouldn't you, if somebody had slipped you US$750,000,000,000 a couple years ago?

Unfortunately, 99% of us live on Main Street. Main Street got nothing two years ago, and what was going to go to Main Street is stuck in the U.S. Senate. So what most of the world thinks of as the U.S. economy is circling the drain, to use an American toilet idiom. So every time the stock market makes another whoopee-ding breakthrough, somebody notices that another 200,000 families got evicted.
Someday, chi1dren, this entire fuck-up will be yours.

Guy, you're only indicating that President Barack Hussein Obama should have been even MORE radical to truly deal with the mess that George Walker Bush GOT STARTED.

Some of us have memories.  It's all very fascinating that you don't, but it's not persuasive.

Besides which, even now the Dow is 4000 points better than it was in the spring of 2009.  You really want to try to make a point, try the Unemployed Lounge thread.  Just sayin'.

You won't get any argument from me, Druul. Everything he has done has been a much higher-quality decision than his predecessor. During a background interview six years ago Karl Rove discussed divisions in the Republican Party as being between the "faith based" and "reality based" factions. It took the reporter a few minutes to figure out that Rove was speaking derisively of the "reality based" faction.

We finally have a president who makes decisions based on reality. Despite Q-BE's belief system, reality has a liberal bias.

Aaand ... at last we have a new high for September (10462.77), the trouble being that we could still stand to add another 240 points, reaching 10700 or higher, so that we'll have a high that beats the one for last month.  So my fingers are crossed that may happen in the next fourteen trading days.

It happened -- today closed at 10753, so at least this month's high beats last month's.

So much of the back-and-forth action over this summer could be prophesied in the first full week of May, when we lost a LOT of ground.  Right now I'm crossing my fingers that we can hit 10870 or higher, thereby beating Cinco de Mayo.

Today's close managed to pass not only that of Cinco de Mayo (10868) but May 4 (10926) as well -- which is important, because so much of the Dow this year has been taken up trying to regain the ground lost since that first full week in May.

Now that it's at 10944, my fingers are crossed for the 11000 mark.

Closed at 11006 today.  Looking forward to 11111 -- the name of this thread.

(To Shara below: hey, the whole idea of this place is a preoccupation with quantity. ;) )

Hey Druul,

At what point do you consider this thread will be irrelevant? IIRC, this thread began as a trek downwards from the Dow's points-level high to 11111, and it just continued from there, down to 6000 some-odd points, and back upwards.

If we should trek back to 12000, or higher, will this thread be effectively moot, and does the recent discovery of  a potentially massive foreclosure scandal/crisis in recent days affect your position on these issues?
