Sarah Palin in a media bubble

The Huffington Post: "Palin's Staffers Keep Her Away From The News To Avoid Being 'Depressed'"

A day after The Washington Post's Dana Milbank wrote about how the Secret Service is blocking press at Sarah Palin's rallies, it appears Palin's staff is blocking her from listening to the press. Palin revealed at a fundraiser last night that she is in an ever-growing media bubble.
Quote:

"So North Carolina, I appreciate you all so much, who are here who already get it. You know, maybe I'm preaching to the choir a little bit here, but being here encourages me because I know that I'm not alone and I'll send this message back to John McCain also. At those times on the campaign trail when sometimes it's easy to get a little bit discouraged, when, you know, when you happen to turn on the news when your campaign staffers will let you turn on the news," she said, prompting laughter from the group. "Usually they're like 'Oh my gosh, don't watch. You're going to, you know, you're going to get depressed.'"

She added that while she doesn't always appreciate the way reporters portray the GOP ticket, she's been bolstered by the prayers of many of the campaign's backers.

"But yeah, sometimes you do get depressed watching what it is that they're reporting and the spin and some of the distortion of what our message is and what we stand for. Sometimes that, that gets draining," she continued. "But it's at events like these and our rallies that we are so energized and inspired and we know that we are not alone. We feel your strength and we feel the power of prayer, so many of you tell us that you are praying for us and praying for our country and that's why we so appreciate you being here."

Palin also attributed polling numbers to God. "We even saw today, thank the Lord," she said, looking upwards and raising her fist, "We saw some movement."

Hmmm. Does anyone in the class remember the last Republican to admit that he was in a media bubble, and what happened thereafter?

Because, like, God totally plays favourites to those who pray vs those who do not.

And if they fail, then God had no involvement.  And if they succeed, then it was God's will.  Yadda yadda yadda.

The pie tree is going along well. But then I found this.

A breast feeding hat? Are we now so go into non-sequiters?

Who gives a fucking rat's ass if our vice president's daughter breast feeds?

This is the scariest article I have read yet.

We have entered the Twilight Zone.
-------------------------------
Breastfeeding Hat Given to Gov. Sarah Palin

Gov. Sarah Palin, US Vice Presidential candidate was given a breastfeeding hat for her "Grandma VP" baby shower at a recent campaign event in Lancaster, PA. "Imagine my thrill when I got the news that MoBoleez hats were selected to be part of Gov. Sarah Palin's 'Baby Shower to Go' for her daughter Bristol " says Diane Sam, inventor of the MoBoleez® hat, a one-of-kind baby hat designed for breastfeeding, with a little head for baby and a big floppy brim that covers the mom's breast.

Vancouver, BC (PRWEB) October 20, 2008 -- Gov. Sarah Palin, US Vice Presidential candidate was given a breastfeeding hat for her "Grandma VP" baby shower at a recent campaign rally in Lancaster, PA.

"Imagine my thrill when I got the news that MoBoleez hats were selected to be part of Gov. Sarah Palin's 'Baby Shower to Go' for her daughter Bristol "says Diane Sam, inventor of the MoBoleez® hat, a one-of-kind baby hat designed for breastfeeding, with a little head for baby and a big floppy brim that covers the mom's breast.

"As a mompreneur, I've had the challenge of breastfeeding on-the-go, and I only run a small business! I commend Gov. Palin for continuing to breastfeed through the challenges of a presidential campaign. A MoBoleez hat is a fun way for Gov. Palin to encourage her daughter to be a proud breastfeeding mom as well. " says Sam.

The hats come in a variety of designs and colours, and include fun illustrations on the top of baby's head such as "Milky Way" and "Cafe au Lait", (visible when breastfeeding of course!). The stylish and eco-friendly bamboo/cotton fabrics, combined with the functionality of a nursing cover without the bulk, and the fun designs/gift packaging makes a MoBoleez® hat the perfect accessory for the hip nursing Mom, like the daughter of a US vice-presidential candidate!

Media are invited to request a complimentary samples and pictures of the MoBoleez hat gifted to Bristol Palin for their review.

I'm not even going to bother to post them, but I just read articles from France and even the United Arab Emirates condemning her. What a train wreck.

From CNN. Now she's calling Obama a socialist. We're back to the red-baiting of the 1950s.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado (CNN) – All of a sudden, Sarah Palin is eager to meet the press.

John McCain’s running mate took questions from her press corps for the second time in three days late Sunday after flying into Colorado Springs. But Palin was not completely on message.

Wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and standing on a breezy tarmac, Palin said that if she had her way, the McCain campaign and the Republican National Committee would not be flooding battleground states with automated phone calls tying Barack Obama to former radical William Ayers, as they have done over the last week.

Several top Republicans, including Senators Susan Collins and Norm Coleman, have condemned the tactic. Asked about those criticisms, Palin at first dismissed the matter as "inside baseball stuff" and said it's "some of the campaign top brass’s call on that."

But when asked if she would approve the use of robocalls if she were running the campaign, Palin said she’d probably chart a different course.

"If I called all the shots, and if I could wave a magic wand," Palin said, "I would be sitting at a kitchen table with more and more Americans, talking to them about our plan to get the economy back on track and winning the war, and not having to rely on the old conventional ways of campaigning that includes those robocalls, and includes spending so much money on the television ads that, I think, is kind of draining out there in terms of Americans' attention span.

"They get a bit irritated with just being inundated," she continued, "and you're seeing a lot of that of course with the huge amounts of money that Barack Obama is able to spend on his ads and his robocalls also."

Ultimately, the Alaska governor said she was not calling for an end to the automated calls, and she did not say if she had spoken to campaign officials at any point about the calls.

Palin was also asked if she and McCain believe that Barack Obama’s tax plan, which would raise taxes on Americans making over $250,000 and provide tax credits to middle and lower-income workers, is socialist. At a campaign rally in New Mexico earlier Sunday, Palin said Obama wants to "experiment with socialism."

"There are socialist principles to that, yes," Palin said of Obama's plan. "Taking more from a small business or small business owners or from a hard working family and then redistributing that money according to a politician’s priorities. There are hints of socialism in there."

Asked if she thinks the government’s plan to inject billions of taxpayer dollars directly into troubled banks amounts to socialism — a belief held by many conservative legislators, talk radio hosts and bloggers — Palin said, "No, I do not."

"I believe that there are those measures that had to be taken by congress to shore up not only the housing market but the credit markets also, to make sure that that’s not frozen, so that our small businesses have opportunities to borrow, and that was the purpose, of course, and that part of the bailout and the shoring of the banks," she said.

From the London Guardian. Holy cow, she wants to be president!
---------------------
Call her the John Edwards of 2008 - an attractive, well-groomed vice-presidential candidate with a popular spouse, pretty hair and a tanning bed and who shows little loyalty to the top of the ticket. Sarah Palin is clearly looking beyond this election, which most Republicans privately concede John McCain will probably lose, and positioning herself for a possible White House run next time. Edwards did the same thing to John Kerry in 2004.

Speaking to people at a Palin rally in Dover, New Hampshire last week it was clear that many in the crowd were much more enthusiastic about the veep candidate than John McCain, who has never been beloved by conservatives. "I wish Sarah was at the top of the ticket," one middle-aged woman told me, unprompted. Palin's solo rallies often draw much bigger crowds that McCain's solo rallies.

In these circumstances - and given the strong possibility that McCain will lose to Barack Obama - it would be surprising if Palin was not turning her thoughts to a presidential run in 2012 or at the very least building a platform for her future in national politics.

Which is why, I'd hazard a guess, that she's constantly straying off message and saying what she thinks rather than what the McCain campaign wants her to say.

Over the weekend, she said she supported a Federal Marriage Amendment and that she was irritated by the McCain campaign's robocalls. She often talks about trying to persuade McCain on drilling in ANWR. She's contradicted McCain on Pakistan and on removing North Korea from the terrorist list.

She also made it clear in this fascinating interview she doesn't like the way she's been "handled" by the McCain campaign - just as Dan Quayle (who, it's easy to forget, went on to twice run for president) did with George H. W. Bush in 1988.

Politics is a tough game. Less than a couple of months ago, McCain lifted Palin from obscurity and catapulted her onto the national and international stage. Now, it appears she's distancing herself from him already in order to carve out her own, independent future as a self-styled straight-talking maverick.

Go on, Governor, keep shooting your mouth off when you obviously have no idea of the meaning of the words escaping from it. The more you do just that, the more Americans will see just how bad an idea it will be to allow you within a mile of the White House, not even as a tourist.

I remember reading somewhere (will have to confirm this so don't quote me) that recently the three Senators in the campaign were given a security briefing but not her. Hmmm, I wonder why? While Sens. Obama, Biden & McCain were at the adult table, they left little Sarah alone at the kiddie table. Surprise, surprise.

I'd venture to say that it was simply that she's a governor, not a Senator. The Senate probably has rules for such things when it comes to classified security briefings.
