Esquire: "This Isn't Funny Anymore. American Democracy Is at Stake.", by Charles P. Pierce
Anyone who supports Donald Trump is a traitor to the American idea.

A while back, we here at the shebeen decided that Donald J. Trump's act was no longer funny. That he no longer was a goofy guy with three wives and a ferret on his head, a freak candidate who devoured an incredible passel of unpopular lightweights on his way to a freak nomination. That he was more than just a vessel for the barely camouflaged rage and fear of an aging white American majority terrified of so many barbarians at so many gates. But not until Wednesday did we realize the true magnitude of the threat that this reckless clown poses to American democracy. Not until Wednesday did we hear clearly the echoes of shiny black boots on German cobblestones.

On Wednesday, in several venues, He, Trump accused "some people"—he never said who they were, nor will he, ever—of calling for a moment of silence for Micah Johnson, the mass murderer of police in Dallas, Texas. We have had some experience with this. Back when he was still considered something of a sideshow attraction, He, Trump said that he's "seen" Muslim-Americans in New Jersey celebrating as the World Trade Center towers burned on September 11, 2001. He never said who they were, nor will he, ever. But at least there was a level of detail to the lie. There is in fact a state called New Jersey. There are in fact Muslim-Americans living there. And the attacks of 9/11 did in fact happen.

Emboldened because this and other whopping untruths did not immediately sink his campaign, He, Trump now has taken his truthless palaver to another level entirely. This is what he said on the stump in Indiana on Wednesday, when he was taking auditions for the men who care so little for their country that they are desperate to be on a ticket with a serial arsonist.

Quote
"The other night you had 11 cities potentially in a blow-up stage. Marches all over the United States—and tough marches. Anger. Hatred. Hatred! Started by a maniac! And some people ask for a moment of silence for him. For the killer!"

To be blunt, this didn't happen.

There is no evidence from any news source that this happened. By anyone. Anywhere. Nobody can find anyone who "called for a moment of silence" for the mass killer of policemen. Nobody has counted "11 cities" that are potentially on the verge of a racial holy war. RaHoWa, cry the white-supremacists. And now the presumptive Republican presidential nominee has joined the chorus. That's where his rhetoric has led him, and far too many people have followed along.

Yeah, but it was Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg who "crossed the line." Jesus, these people.

Nobody can find anyone who called for a moment of silence. Nobody can list the 11 cities. On Wednesday, Sam Clovis, a fringe character from Iowa who has been elevated to co-chairman of He, Trump's campaign, was put on a spit by CNN's Chris Cuomo and turned, slowly, over an open flame. Via Tiger Beat On The Potomac:

Quote
Cuomo preceded his line of questioning by remarking that Trump's claim was similar to one he made months ago when he said he had seen seen Muslims celebrating in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks. Cuomo asked Clovis whether he could elucidate what Trump was referring to Tuesday night in Westfield, Indiana. "But calling for a moment of silence?" Cuomo said. "Well, it depends on the context, I guess, Chris," Clovis responded. "And frankly, I've had my nose buried in other issues. I'm not dodging your question." Cuomo was not buying it. "Sam, you're dodging it. You're dodging it. You're doing it artfully, but you're dodging it," the anchor remarked, as Clovis denied that he was doing so. "Context, my eye. Either you've seen they were calling for a moment of silence or you haven't."

Damn them all now.

Damn the delegates who will vote for this man. Damn the professional politicians who will fall in line behind him or, worse, will sit back and hope this all blows over so the Republican Party once again will be able to relegate the poison this man has unleashed to the backwaters of the modern conservative intellectual mainstream, which is where it has been useful for over four decades. Damn the four hopeless sycophants who want to share a stage with him for four months. Damn all the people who will come here and speak on his behalf. Damn all the thoughtful folk who plumb his natural appeal for anything deeper than pure hatred.

Damn all the people who will vote for him, and damn any progressives who sit this one out because Hillary Rodham Clinton is wrong on this issue or that one. Damn all the people who are suggesting they do that. And damn all members of the media who treat this dangerous fluke of a campaign as being in any way business as usual. Any support for He, Trump is, at this point, an act of moral cowardice. Anyone who supports him, or runs with him, or enables his victory, or even speaks well of him, is a traitor to the American idea.

Damn, to name one, Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, the zombie-eyed granny-starver from the state of Wisconsin, now exposed as the feckless political weakling he's always been. On Wednesday, during an inexcusable CNN-sponsored informercial for himself, Ryan was asked the only question that mattered:

Quote
But the challenge facing Ryan was clear when he was asked a question by Zachary Marcone, a Republican who said he couldn't support Trump because he is "openly racist." "Can you tell me, how can you morally justify your support for this kind of candidate?" Marcone asked.

Ryan responded like the spineless careerist tool he's always been.

Quote
"You're going to help elect Hillary Clinton and I don't think Hillary Clinton is supporting any of the things you stand for if you're a Republican."

In other words, if we don't elect this authoritarian wild man, I won't get to gut Medicare the way I've always wanted to.

If I were Ryan, I'd put that on a bumper sticker.

Here is the truth. Nobody called for a moment of silence for Micah Johnson. Eleven U.S. cities are not on the brink of racial violence. He, Trump just made that shit up so his followers can stay afraid and angry at the people he wants them to fear and hate. This lie was a marching order and the Party of Lincoln is right in step with him, straight into the burning Reichstag of this man's mind.

Welcome to the 2016 Republican convention: a four-day celebration of the ritual suicide of American democracy.

"Welcome to the 2016 Republican convention: a four-day celebration of the ritual suicide of American democracy.

With balloons."

It's started.

A number of Anti-Trump delegations at the Convention wanted a roll call vote on the convention rules. It would have been mostly for show, since it was clear that there was enough support to pass the Pro-Trump rules.

What happened is too complicated to summarize. Read it here:

http://www.politico.com/story/2016/07/never-trump-delegates-have-support-needed-to-force-rules-vote-225716

There were party officials feuding in front of TV cameras. A party secretary nowhere to be found, so people could not present their petitions.....

"This may be the first time the other party's nominee gets the post-convention boost." - Right wing radio show host Steve Deace

The first controversy of the Republican National Convention occurred well before day one, when signs for "white elevators" were spotted in the halls.

The convention also, reportedly, has red and blue elevators — part of a patriotic color trio — at the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland. It is unclear why none of the convention staff realized "white elevators" might remind convention-goers of not-so-distant times when segregation was legal.

The presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, who will be nominated at the event, has flirted with overt white supremacism ever since he officially waded into the election in June, 2015.

Trump began his election campaign by calling Mexican immigrants "rapists," and has been praised by former Ku Klux Klan Grand Wizard David Duke, so it wasn't particularly hard for many people to draw a connection between those overtones and the "white elevators" signs adorning the convention.

Though convention staff were reportedly working to replace those signs, not all of them were gone by opening day.

As if that wasn't bad enough, Drumpf's wife totally jacked Michelle Obama's speech from 2008 for her own lame attempt at being on the world stage. This on the same night when Republican Congressman Steve King had the audacity to claim on MSNBC that white Christians contributed more to civilization than anyone else. So I guess the Chinese and the Egyptians and the Arabs who kept science alive during Europe's Dark Ages are all white now?

Plaigiarism and fakery  runs in the family, apparently, since none of her husband's tomes were actually written by him.

Quote

Trump, facing a crowd that had gathered in the lobby of Trump Tower, on Fifth Avenue, laid out his qualifications, saying, “We need a leader that wrote ‘The Art of the Deal.’ ” If that was so, [Tony] Schwartz thought, then he, not Trump, should be running. Schwartz dashed off a tweet: “Many thanks Donald Trump for suggesting I run for President, based on the fact that I wrote ‘The Art of the Deal.’ ”

Schwartz had ghostwritten Trump’s 1987 breakthrough memoir, earning a joint byline on the cover, half of the book’s five-hundred-thousand-dollar advance, and half of the royalties. The book was a phenomenal success, spending forty-eight weeks on the Times best-seller list, thirteen of them at No. 1. More than a million copies have been bought, generating several million dollars in royalties. The book expanded Trump’s renown far beyond New York City, making him an emblem of the successful tycoon. Edward Kosner, the former editor and publisher of New York, where Schwartz worked as a writer at the time, says, “Tony created Trump. He’s Dr. Frankenstein.”

...Until Schwartz posted the tweet, though, he had not spoken publicly about Trump for decades. It had never been his ambition to be a ghostwriter, and he had been glad to move on. But, as he watched a replay of the new candidate holding forth for forty-five minutes, he noticed something strange: over the decades, Trump appeared to have convinced himself that he had written the book. Schwartz recalls thinking, “If he could lie about that on Day One—when it was so easily refuted—he is likely to lie about anything.”

...Schwartz thought about publishing an article describing his reservations about Trump, but he hesitated, knowing that, since he’d cashed in on the flattering “Art of the Deal,” his credibility and his motives would be seen as suspect. Yet watching the campaign was excruciating. Schwartz decided that if he kept mum and Trump was elected he’d never forgive himself. In June, he agreed to break his silence and give his first candid interview about the Trump he got to know while acting as his Boswell.

“I put lipstick on a pig,” he said. “I feel a deep sense of remorse that I contributed to presenting Trump in a way that brought him wider attention and made him more appealing than he is.” He went on, “I genuinely believe that if Trump wins and gets the nuclear codes there is an excellent possibility it will lead to the end of civilization.”

If he were writing “The Art of the Deal” today, Schwartz said, it would be a very different book with a very different title. Asked what he would call it, he answered, “The Sociopath.”

It's a shame you don't want to have your head up Hillary's ass. There's a really great party going on in here! Goldman Sachs is providing the booze, and it's all top shelf! Oh well - more for us, then!  ;D

Not so sure you will like this, but that top billed party with Goldman Sachs providing the booze is for VIP only. You know, the Jaime Dimons, the George Soros, Bill Gates, Janet Yellens of the world.... not the average peasants.  :'(
I can appreciate a good sense of humor though!

Maybe Trump was referring to these guys:
One
Two
Three
Four
Five
There is way more..

Not too much of a stretch in what Trump said.

Back when he was still considered something of a sideshow attraction, He, Trump said that he's "seen" Muslim-Americans in New Jersey celebrating as the World Trade Center towers burned on September 11, 2001. I have done my fair share of research on 9/11 and I will say that I have never seen any footage or evidence showing Muslims celebrating on that day. But I did come across something where it suggests that people (not of Christian faith) did celebrate in some form.... Which is disgusting if true.

WHAT?!? You mean to tell me that Trumps wife stole/plagiarized Michelle O's speech??? BUYGAWD the insanity! Where oh where have I seen this done before? I dont think anyone has ever done this before! OH NOEZZZ!! To think that she used similar sentences and messages... The NERVE!

I gotta think hard here.....   >:( .......  ??? .......  Oh yeah!  :o

People need to get the fuhk over it and find another way to talk negatively about the Trumpster. Sheesh.

With regards to the "borrowed" paragraphs in the speech, it's not so much the plagiarism as the bungled overreaction. Political speeches, when they touch on common themes, clearly tend to use common language. It would have been a minor story if the campaign 'fessed up to unintentionally adapting a couple of sentences.

But when you outright deny any plagiarism, and then say it's Hillary's fault (as Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort did), well, then you let the controversy take over. And whatever Melania had to say gets quickly forgotten.

And you lose another day. No one is ever going to care what else happened that day.

Yawn. People talk about things in PRIVATE e-mails all the time. That doesn't mean there's a Conspiracy of EEEvil. And fences like those in the photo are perfectly normal for crowd control at a major event like a political convention.

Yes, we get it. You HATE HATE HATE the Democrats and Clinton. You hates them to pieces!!! That's fine. But you better had get used to living under a Democratic president for the next four (at least) years.

....

Donny Boy has just shot his mouth off again, saying he'd be fine with Russia hacking our computer networks to recover Clinton's "missing" e-mails. Doesn't inviting a foreign power to attack us count as treason? Or at least criminal?

By the way, I did pay a little attention to the Republican convention. For all his faults, I have to say that Ted Cruz has some honor. No one could honestly expect him to support the candidate who insulted his wife and dishonored his father.....

I did catch the last half of Drumpf's speech at the end of the Con. I didn't see it as "dark" as the commentators did; I just thought it was a cask-strength distillation of everything he's been saying all along.

And it probably wasn't a good idea - at least I didn't think it was - for the closing song to the entire Con to be "You Can't Always Get What You Want".....

About as treasonous as a bunch of sitting Congresspeople writing a letter to the leader of a foreign power in order to undermine the work of the Commander-in-Chief, thus violating the Logan Act.

Never thought I would say "Good on you, Ted. Good on you." For the party that is trying to set itself up (again) as "the party of law and order", I wonder why they would boo him for simply saying "Vote your conscience." Unless they are conscience-less.

John Oliver enlists Usher, Sheryl Crow, Michael Bolton and others to shame candidates who don’t get permission for music.
Quote

Oliver’s intro riffs on the recent mini-controversies that have arisen from Donald Trump using Queen and REM songs at his events, but also makes clear just how long-running and widespread a trend it is for politicians on both sides of the aisle to annoy the music world with “unauthorized” campaign playlists. Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the USA” is the canonical example, and in this new song Heart and Imagine Dragons’s Dan Reynolds team up for this couplet: “Why would Reagan be playin’ ‘Born in the USA’? It’s about Vietnam!”

The proudly hammy music video has a few fun zingers, including a dig at Spotify and a segment where a cat walks across a keyboard to provide a tune that politicians can use for free. But the most telling moment is when Usher says, “Don’t use our songs. That’s licensing. You gotta call my publisher.” The truth is that many of the times when musicians speak out about the use of their work in politics, the offending politician is in the clear, legally speaking. It usually depends on the venue: Somewhere like the Quicken Loans Arena, where the RNC happened, has likely already obtained a blanket license from performance-rights organizations, which allows the use of almost any song. If a venue doesn’t have a license, the campaign will usually obtain one.

Imagine if Obama, Kamala, or Biden survived two assassination attempts and the media not publicly destroying the reputation of everyone who issued even the most mild criticism of them and then just dropping the story completely.

Yeah, I cannot either.
