President Obama was the first-ever sitting president of the United States to appear on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. He was a guest on the show, he didn't host it

By most accounts, yes...although he did make a crack about his bowling ability that some people found offensive on behalf of the Special Olympics. However, he apologised for it even before the show aired to the head of the organization, and his apology was accepted.

I was sort of suprised to hear it was the first time an US president guested a talkshow, here in Europe/Sweden, politians are often guests at similar talkshows and other TV shows, but on the other hand we dosent have any president....

Must be nice to be the messiah...ya think if Bush or McCain had done the exact same thing, they would have gotten as much leniency?

Not at all!  Bush would have been crucified for that sort of comment.  I mean, invading a sovereign nation based on false pretenses is one thing (mushroom clouds!), but insulting the special olympics?  That's just wrong.

G.W. got criticized almost every time he made a massive blunder or mistake.  It totally wasn't fair.

I don't know if you are being sarcastic or serious, so let us look at what exactly he said and the response to it.

The relevant section of President Obama's appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno

Craig Ferguson (a comedian by profession) on MSNBC's Countdown with Keith Olbermann

Tim Shriver (the chairman of the Special Olympics) on Obama's gaffe and the subsequent apology he personally made to him, before the show aired, and the teachable moment that gaffe brings

In my opinion, the gaffe was unfortunate, but not nearly as unfortunate as when President Bush made a joke about looking for WMDs under the table in the Oval Office. To remind you: this past week marked the 6th anniversary of the start of the conflict in Iraq.

Yeah, that was a real kneeslapper.  Haha, he can't find the WMDs anywhere, because there aren't any!  Oops sent a few thousand US soldiers off to die looking for them... we all make little mistakes!

I was saying it tongue-in-cheek, actually.  Half serious and half sarcastic.

No need to remind me about the anniversary of the war, stupid jokes about "can't find WMDs," etc.  I've been over there once and I'll be back in 5 months!

The danger with open mics is, uh, they're open...

With the town hall, the president pulled a leaf from the Dubya playbook; pack the house with friendlies giving you softball questions. Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose, I guess

Bush meant to say SBDs, not WMDs. Dick Cheney dropped ass that would kill a bitch.
To paraphrase Poul Anderson, "Intelligence is a wonderful thing. It provides us with reasons for doing what we were going to do anyway."

Forget whether you voted for or against him, speaking strictly from a technological POV, you have to give it up for the team behind his online efforts. They took a junior senator from Illinois with a funny name and no hope in hell of beating the "inevitable candidate" Hillary Clinton all the way to 1600 Penn. Ave. Remarkable.
