Wasn't there a case of rubber ducks or slippers or sneakers (I can't remember which) that kept on washing ashore in France or Spain (I can't remember which) for years, which they thought came off of a container that fell off a ship that one time?

I'm pretty sure it was sneakers, and Nike decided to release the info because the sneakers turned out to be of major help in tracking ocean currents.
