The USS Tripoli (LHA-7) departs San Diego with 20 F-35B Lightning II VTOL (Vertical Take Off and Landing) fighters from Marine Fighter Attack Squadrons 211 and 225 for a demonstration and training of the concept of a Lightning carrier. For years there have been those that advocate we should stop building 100,000 ton nuclear supercarriers and replace them with smaller and cheaper 50,000 ton conventional carriers. Due to its range, load, speed and stealth, the F-35B has transformed what were mostly helicopter carriers to real carriers and so the USA will soon have 11 Nimitz/Ford class nuclear carriers and 12 LHA and LHD (Landing Helicopter Assault and Landing Helicopter Dock) 50,000 ton carriers. This will give the US Navy and US Marine Corps more flexibility on deployment of assets to deter aggression.

The World War 2 destroyer USS The Sullivans (DD-537), now berthed at the Buffalo and Erie County Naval and Military Park Museum, suffered a hull breach on the Starboard side which caused it to lean on its side. She will not sink completely because the berth she is at is only five feet below her keel. She was commissioned in 1943 and decommissioned in 1965. She served in the WW2 Pacific war, Korean war and Vietnam war. She was a Fletcher class destroyer, which is the single largest class of destroyer ships ever built in World history. She was named after the sad and tragic loss of the five Sullivan brothers who were serving together in a ship which was torpedoed by the Japanese in 1942 and all five were lost. After that, the policy changed, and the US Navy ever since does not allow siblings to serve in the same ship so that no more mothers lose all their children at once. Hopefully the ship will be patched, the water pumped and righted back up to its proper place.

Two F-16 Falcons and two F-4 Phantom II from the Hellenic (Greek) Air Force escort a B-52H from the 69th Expeditionary Bomb Squadron stationed at RAF Fairford, UK somewhere near the Aegean Sea. Mind you, the last B-52 was manufactured in 1962 and the last Phantom II was manufactured in 1976.
