Coffee translation guide

I'm not a coffee drinker but it is nice to have a sign which clears up some of the lingo.

While that may basically be true, no one—in America, at least—says chai without it meaning a specific kind of black tea with additional spices.  I can’t speak for other countries, but in the U.S., if you ask for chai tea, you’re basically referring to Indian Masala Chai, not Earl Grey or any other variant.  So turn that frown upside down 🙃 and let’s get the word out that pizza pie is redundant!

The Republic of Niger (pronounced knee-zhair, not nigh-jer) is in west Africa, not central Africa. Libya is to its northeast, Chad is to its east, Nigeria is to its south, Benin and Burkina Faso are to its southwest, Mali is to its west, and Algeria is to its northwest.

I've spent many a month in the vast deserts and Sahel of the country. Eerily beautiful.

Regardless of what Starbucks et al. say, calling it "chai tea" is wrong; because the word chai means "tea", that's as redundant as calling it "the Sahara Desert" (the word Sahara means "desert"). If you want to reference the fact that it has spices, call it what the originators of the drink call it: masala chai. (Masala means "spices" or "a spice blend.")

Now, the etymology of the term "pizza pie" is interesting in its own right. Technically it's correct, although it sounds as redundant as "chai tea" to most people's ears. Still, its history is fascinating.
