First of its class, the USS Gerald Ford (CVN-78) is finally underway in the North Atlantic along with other NATO navies thanks to Russia. She is quite radical in many perspectives since so much new technology was put in her which no other ship has. Part of the reason she took so long to build and commission. For example, her reactor is a 50-55 year lifetime and therefore, unlike the Nimitz class before her, she won't need to be refueled which usually takes 2-3 years to do, which means she'll be available longer and for more deployments. Her reactors are three times more powerful which means that as times come along, she'll be able to deploy direct energy defensive/offensive weapons. Also, her catapults are electromagnetic which means she can launch more sorties than a Nimitz class steam catapults. Her elevators are electromagnetic also which means they not only go up and down but sideways also allowing for more, faster and better weapons distribution and loads. She is more automated, so her crew is about 700 less than that of the Nimitz class which will save billions of Dollars in manpower costs in her 50+ year lifetime. It costs about $100,000 a year per sailor since not only you got to pay his/her salary but benefit costs, logistical support, habitability support, family support (if married) and other miscellaneous costs. Anyways, 100,000+ tons and a flight deck of 4 1/2 acres of American Military/Diplomatic force.
