They are not Spanish speakers, but Portuguese is a Latin language and Spanish and Portuguese are close cousins. Also, geographically speaking, Brazil is classified as a part of  Latin America.

Yeah, I'm not surprised Colbert feels that way.  He's a huge Tolkien geek, and visited the Laketown set of The Hobbit when Peter was filming there.  He and his two sons had cameos, and Peter gave Stephen a Sting.

Brazilians are Latino, but they are not Hispanic.

Latinos are people from countries outside of Europe who, due to the brutal colonialism of the respective countries, speak Spanish and Portuguese. The former are known as hispanophone countries, the latter are known as lusophone countries. Hispanophone countries are Hispanic as well as Latino. Lusophone countries are not Hispanic, but they are Latino.

And that's not to mention people from the Philippines, from Goa in India, from Macau in (now) PR China, etc.
