As a Veteran, I can get some good deals around today. Today is known as Remembrance Day in the UK, Canada and Australia but here in the USA, it's known as Veterans Day and part of the difference is that while the USA honors all Veterans of all wars and peacetime, the other countries mostly celebrate it for World War One and they wear Poppies on their shirts.

Some of you may remember the radio program Car Talk.

I came up with this - based on direct personal observation - which I would have submitted for a "Puzzler" if the timing was right. Anyway.....

My new car has a thing that shows the gas mileage for the trip when you shut off the engine (short journeys, like half a mile, don't get a separate reset on the calculation).

I've noticed that on my way to work, I get significantly better gas mileage (by around 4-5 MPG) than on my way back home. I take the same route and there's no real change in traffic - it takes me about the same amount of time either way. There's no dramatic change in weather conditions between morning and afternoon every single day. And I'm not carrying passengers on the way home (or stealing boxes of copier paper) that could have an effect.

What could be causing the difference?

What could be causing the difference?

Only thing I can think of is, is there a temperature difference between the two times of day?  If there is, that would cause a volume change in the gas tank, as the gas expands or contracts with the temp.  It the gas gauge is calculating based on height of gas in the tank, that might cause it?

I can't think of anything else really.
