MISSING IMAGE ATTACHMENTS
« on: June 22, 2009, 12:59:41 PM »
Dear BEA forum users,

As you probably know, the BEA forum was hacked a few weeks back and all data was lost... except for the data that was backed up prior to the hacking fiasco. The back ups were incrementally being made (daily) for the database, however the attachments were not being backed up as often (due to the sheer magnitude of the data). Unfortunately, the data for more recent attachments was overwritten by the "hacked" (or rather, deleted) data, as backups were made overwriting old data. This was a mistake on the part of the system administrators and NOT the moderators (so please don't complain to them). Because of this the way backups are being made has changed as to prevent this from occurring again. Of the tens of thousands of attachments that the forum had, about a quarter of them were lost.

Please DO NOT spend time asking moderators to restore missing attachments as it is not possible. What is online now is what has been restored. Unfortunately, this is the way things turned out and we mustn't get discouraged for future participation on the forum. This community has been built on the hard work of the users, moderators and admins and we should continue to build it together. Mistakes were made but knocking each other around over it won't solve anything.

If you have any images stored on your hard drive that you see are "missing" do us all a kind favor and reupload them to the thread.

Cheers,
Gabe

Thanks for the clarification Gabe... it is appreciated.

Might I ask... you say that about a quarter of UBB forum attachments were lost due to a backup snafu... does this mean we might expect that the other three-quarters (which surely represents many thousands of images) could eventually be restored/returned once sysadmins have a chance to do so (that scripting to repair file path thing you mentioned)?

Or is everything now missing going to definitely stay missing forever?

Just curious. Thanks again. :)

Good one, gOOber!  I chuckled, laughed, and snorted thru my nose at various points in that little message.   ;D

To change Forum settings so that you see 50 topics per page:
Go to Forum Profile
Hover cursor over "Modify Profile" button in top left
Select "Look and Layout"
Scroll to "Topics to display per page", select 50 in dropdown menu
Click on "Change Profile" at bottom right of page.

You can also change "Messages to display per page" to 50 in the same way.

Just reiterating since so many new users are still asking about it:

All images posted between January 31, 2008 and June 1, 2009 were lost due to human error during a system backup/restore and will not be coming back. If you can see ANY image attachments (those images located on the BEA Forum server, not necessarily those hosted externally) from before Jan 1 '08 and/or after June 1, '09 THEN YOU CAN SEE THE SAME IMAGES AS EVERYONE ELSE AND NOTHING NEEDS TO BE FIXED IN YOUR ACCOUNT.

So, please: don't ask for an account reset UNLESS you can't see ANY images, including any from before or after the 'lost' period. Thanks.

Added 13feb12: since the issue of the missing image attachments is now covered in another pinned Site Issues thread, I'm going to un-sticky this thread in an effort to neaten things up a bit (remove the redundancy). Thanks. -Pal
