Lyrics you've misunderstood
« on: October 24, 2009, 03:26:49 AM »
Okay, so, I was going through some music recently, trying to put things back in order (curse you ZUNE!), and I came across an old cd I had. Billboards top 10 1986. I'm a **09** of the 80's, grew up with big hair and pop, so I like some weird music. But one of my favorite songs from that year and from that cd is Kyrie by Mister Mister. The actual lyric is Kyrie Eleison, which, apparently, means "O Lord, have mercy." Or something to that effect. I was about 10 when this song came out, and I loved it, because, back then, I thought he was saying "Carrying my laser".

I know, I was a kid.

But, think about it. A guy walking through the troubles in his life with a laser? That's pretty cool. Even when you're not 10 anymore...

But, it got me thinking. I'm sure I'm not the only person here to mistake lyrics (hell, there's even a website http://www.kissthisguy.com/). What are some that you remember the most? How long did it take you to find out the actual lyrics?

For the record, I didn't learn the actual lyrics till I looked them up today online, cause I always wondered what it was.

The Police song "So Lonely" sounded like "Sue Lawley" who was at the time a British TV news presenter

Anita Baker's "Same Ole Love" had a line in the chorus which I would gleefully run around the house singing as

"One hundred, two hundred, three hundred sixty five days in the year..."

when finally my sister stopped me and said, "Are you crazy?" The actual lyric goes:

"From beginning to end, three hundred sixty five days of the year..."

Well, it made sense to me at the time :)

There's that song everybody sings at the beginning of the baseball game to the Mexican players, "Jose, can you see?"

For many years I thought "Money for Nothing" (I Want My MTV) by Dire Straits had a stroke of genius and cynicism, as the whole song was about the music and MTV just existing to put eyeballs on the channel and sell advertising "We've got to move these refrigerators, we've got to move these color TVs...."
Then I finally heard the lyrics clearly enough to discover it was just another song from the point of view of working schlubs wishing they were rockstars. Much less interesting, IMHO.

No mention of "Blinded By The Light"...?

Or maybe that song would qualify better in a "Lyrics you were never able to understand" thread...?  ;)

Still a great song though, and still one of my favorites :)

One of the most famous mondegreens is from Jimi Hendrix: people mistakenly hear "Excuse me while I kiss this guy" instead of the actual lyric of "Excuse me, while I kiss the sky."
