I am merging the 'punk' threads. Given that they are all extremely similar. It really does seem redundant to have 5 separate threads, especially when certain people seem to be posting in the for the sake of it

I cannot speak for others—but I only posted in them when I found something cool.  Wow, with one fell swoop you’ve gone and sucked all the fun out of it.  If I want to go back now and check something out that’s relevant to a specific genre you’ve made that a lot more difficult.  It’s not my forum, though, you can do what you want. But, it’s too much of a pain to look back through it now, so I won’t bother posting in this now monster thread of unrelated material.

salem,

Extremely similar?  LOL... Steampunk has about as much to do with Cyberpunk as Queen Victoria has to do with Princess Lea.  I mean, I don't really care, but Cris mentioned it to me and I figured I'd stop by and take a look and put in my two cents.  Not sure if anyone really appreciated those threads to see what was posted, anyway.  I mean, solvegas made like 80% to 90% of the posts and Cris made up most of the rest.  But, my question is: why was it such a big deal?  Why do you and rptoe give a tinker's cuss about those threads so much that you felt the need to "tidy them up"?  Just the need to ruin someone else's harmless fun?  LOL

Okay, just my thoughts on the whole thing.  Like I said, I doubt anyone besides Cris or George really cared, anyway.

Quote from wikipedia

Since the advent of the cyberpunk genre, a number of derivatives of cyberpunk have become recognized in their own right as distinct subgenres in speculative fiction, especially in science fiction.[1] Rather than necessarily sharing the digitally and mechanically focused setting of cyberpunk, these derivatives can display other futuristic, or even retrofuturistic, qualities that are drawn from or analogous to cyberpunk: a world built on one particular technology that is extrapolated to a highly sophisticated level (this may even be a fantastical or anachronistic technology, akin to retrofuturism), a gritty transreal urban style, or a particular approach to social themes.

Steampunk, one of the most well-known of these subgenres, has been defined as a "kind of technological fantasy;"[1] others in this category sometimes also incorporate aspects of science fantasy and historical fantasy.[2] Scholars have written of the stylistic place of these subgenres in postmodern literature, as well as their ambiguous interaction with the historical perspective of postcolonialism.

I should have said 'subgenres of Cyberpunk' rather than 'extremely similar'. I stand by what I said though, I would often come into the off-topic board and see EVERY subgenre posted in just for the sake if it. If you want to blame someone, blame the people who have no posting restraint. It was getting beyond a joke.

You say “people”.  It was one individual, and yes, it was annoying. Like I said, it’s not my forum, do what you want.  I have to tell you though, it’s very disheartening and frustrating, especially when I wasn’t the one posting a pic to all the threads just because (although, I have to say, as annoying as that was, I don’t see why it really mattered if he did that: what harm did it really cause?).

I think I need to take break from the forum.  I come here for fun and suddenly that factor seems to be missing.

I don't know who started it. "Cyberpunk" was the first; then "steampunk" got in on the act. OK, those two are legit. But now it seems that every design aesthetic or art style - no matter how limited in time and space - gets its own separate "-punk" designation. And frankly, it's gotten silly. "Yep, there is one of these for basically every decade of the 20th century," says "Isaac" at Sorcerer of Tea (who lists FIFTEEN major "-punk" genres - with examples)

Oceanpunk! Cattlepunk! Pharaohpunk!

OK, I made that last one up. But for a second, weren't you picturing an Ancient Egyptian milieu with powered chariots and flying reed boats? And I'll bet someone's tried it.

It's all basically "Retro-Tech Fantasy", and frankly, much of it doesn't deserve a separate designation.

may there be enough food for all creatures,
may the diminishing light in our daytime skies
be met by an increasing compassion and tolerance
in our hearts.

This is a damn shame.

First of all, since when is Cyberpunk retro?

It looks to me like the Steampunk thread was started way back in 2009 by evilkirk to talk about a costume he put together.  I went thru pages and pages until there was a cyberpunk post.  I don't know how it works, but I'm guessing when threads are merged, they are merged chronologically as to when the replies were posted.  Having cyberpunk mixed in with Steampunk frankly seems stupid, but maybe that's just me.

I mean, I don't really care, myself, but the boys were having such fun with these and you've all just gone and shoved them together like a weird leftover casserole.  I mean, I do agree that Steampunk, Decopunk and Dieselpunk are pretty freakin' similar.  But Atomicpunk and Cyberpunk are totally different animals.  Whatever.  Define them the way you want.  I just get the sneaking suspicion that you all just got annoyed when Solvegas just posted stuff in them everyday just because.  But, you know what, he was having fun, so what's the big deal, really?   Who did it hurt?  Shoving all those punks into one thread just seems mean-spirited.

This merging did not need to happen, Salem.  I'm sorry, but that's the way I feel.  I didn't even participate in them, but I can certainly see how those who were would take umbrage.

I should probably address this now that a month has passed.

I didn't take the decision lightly, and I know that a few people are upset about it, even though all the posts are still there, all under one roof. It really did not make sense to have so many threads on what are essentially sub-genres of the same thing. If they weren't, they would not all have 'punk' in the name. I can assure you I wasn't doing it to be mean.

I did actually ask advice from Palomine about it, we e-mail occasionally about forum stuff and he agreed with me.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing and in hindsight I could have left it alone, however there was one poster in particular who seemed to post in these threads for the sake of it, and it was getting silly.

I like George, and do enjoy his posts. He is a valued contributor to the BEA. However, he has caused me a few problems over the years with his lackadaisical attitude to posting, so much so that he has been banned a few times. When discussing it with Palomine, he did mention that the BEA has had problems with George in the past too. George has a tendency to go looking for things to post in threads, and a lot of the time he is none too careful in what he posts, which is the opposite to what most of us do in that we post stuff in threads that we come across online. This has led to countless posts having to be removed over the last few years because he has posted pictures from Daktari, Score Pictures with no logos etc. I am currently the only moderator here, and I frankly don't have the time to run around constantly checking every post. People rarely report posts anymore unless someone says something politically that they don't like.

If anyone wants to go through this thread and make a note of all the posts from a particular sub-genre of 'punk', I could separate it from the main thread. When I have the time.

I only have two questions:

How is Palomine doing? Glad to hear that he's still in the land of the living.

Who the heck is George? :D

I resent what happened to these threads. Yes, I was the one mostly posting on them BUT I was not lackadaisical about it. If anybody bothers to look at the forum statistics, you will notice that I have spent a lot of time on the forum and that is because it takes me a lot of time to find the material. I don't belong to a lot of paysites and I do make mistakes and I've paid the price. :(
