You might want to reconsider whether to do anything with the background at all. Your work, not so strangely, has emphasized the background and made it a distraction.

I like it a lot, but it is true that the background is messy a little.  Background can be very hard to do.  Like what already said, try working with different layer (background, foreground, etc) and also, try the Content-Aware Scale in Photoshop. :)
