Corporate flack who standardized CD at 75 minutes dies.

Norio Ohga, former CEO of Sony, died April 25. Many obituaries credited him with inventing the CD. He did not. He did persuade Sony to begin mass production of the 75-minute CD in 1981.

James T. Russell invented the process of optical-digital recording and playback in 1965, and it was first used in consumer electronics produced by Phillips in 1972.

Dr. Alfred Freedman died April 17, 2011 at the age of 94.

People born since 1970 have probably never heard of him, nor of his accomplishments.

He was a psychiatrist. He started one of, if not the first community-based drug treatment programs in East Harlem in 1959. But he is best known for being elected in 1972 as president of the American Psychiatric Association in its first contested election. He won by 3 votes out of 9,000. The election was close because it was a one-issue election: Freedman was open to the idea that homosexuality was not a mental illness.

It seems monumentally stupid now, but in 1972 a person could be committed to a mental hospital for being gay. Since lawyers and judges are dumber than psychiatrists, it took another 20-odd years until they could not be arrested.
