Flameouts of 2012
« on: December 08, 2012, 04:32:02 PM »
Living near the border, and listening to a lot of radio, I have become fond of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. Many news services offer a list at the end of the year of "Best of..." or "Most important..." or whatever. The CBC offers "Flameouts of the Year"; and you can vote: www.cbc.ca/day6. Whatever rules there are, are flexible; but the list is for people who are to one degree or another, famous, and who, through their own efforts, fucked up so badly as to be considered flameouts.

Right now Lance Armstrong is in the lead, followed by "Canada's Mayors", a collective group of fuck-ups you have to have followed to understand. Also in the running are groups like "KONY 2012" who started out making a ton of money, and ended up running naked down the street in a drug-crazed frenzy. My personal favorite was Silvio Berlusconi, but you have to have followed European news a lot closer than most U.S. news services to understand why.

Among the entries who started strong, but came up short, was Donald Trump. What does it say about a man that he failed to make a strong showing as Failure of the Year?
Someday, chi1dren, this entire fuck-up will be yours.

I'd suggest the Twinkie or Romney, but both have been around a long time, have long shelf life, and were not exactly on fire to start with. Lindsay Lohan comes to mind, but she flamed out long ago.  What we need are nominations comparable to New Coke. Now there was a flame out, children. "Catch the Wave!"

P.S. Does the CBC still air "As It Happens," Pb? Loved that show! My NPR affiliate no longer carries it, unfortunately.

Truly a great program!

Yes, it's still on. I don't know why some NPR stations dropped it. The best way to get it is by computer from the "As It Happens" web site.

EDIT: Hmmm. Lindsay was my first thought, too, and Romney would be on my list. There's room for Grover Norquist, too.

EDIT REDUX: Maybe I can interest some readers into digging up the story about Berlusconi--There should be a looseleaf binder for the presidents of moderately-significant countries. Somewhere in there should be a page which reads, "Don't fuck underag3 women. And if you do fuck underag3 women, learn how to correctly pronounce their names."

Jimmy Saville, although he is now dead, his misdemeanors with minors has come to light recently and they have had to remove his gravestone for fear of vandals!

As Silvio said, "She looked old enough!" But it sounds better in Italian.

Note to mods: While Ms Minetti may have been underag3 when she hooked up with Silvio, she was definitely of age when this photo was taken.

No.  Nicole Minetti is the dental hygienist turned party member (she’s sitting in parliament in the first photo) who may or may not have hired the underag3 prostitute who attended Berlusconi’s bunga bunga parties.

Too bad they didn't have write-in voting options. I would have put "the Republican Party".

Another who attended the bunga bunga parties (pronounced: BOONG-guh BOONG-guh) was Italian-Brazilian showgirl Barbara Guerra:

Well, Mitt Romney didn't so much flame out as never really get started in the first place. And no one cares about Donald Trump.

And we do have to limit ourselves to actions that took place entirely within the calendar year of 2012.

So I submit to you: Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi. When he was chosen to lead that nation in June, things were really looking great for Egypt. A new government, a new clearly democratically elected leader... Then last month he ruined everything by seizing all governmental powers. Now it looks like he may not last another month...

What a cockup.

Well, it's a marvelous night for a Moondance
With the stars up above in your eyes
A fantabulous night to make romance
'Neath the cover of October skies
And all the leaves on the trees are falling
To the sound of the breezes that blow...

Van Morrison, Moondance

I was going to suggest Amy Winehouse, but in checking I see that was in 2011. So long ago already? Anyway, it reminded me that true, real flameouts are not funny at all. Sigh . . . peace to their ashes.

Karima el-Mahroug aka Ruby Rubacuori (which means Ruby the Heart-Stealer) outside the courtroom in Milan last week.  Birth date: Nov 1, 1992.
