Recently fate brought me in touch with an archeologist named Bill Saturno, who is a really fine human being. He teaches for a living, but occasionally spends time in Guatemala finding and preserving Maya murals. When he was describing a particular find, after chopping thru some distance of jungle which is referred to as a "road", he mentioned that some looters had been there two weeks before. Later he mentioned a site where a group of looters had been there during a particular week.
Finally somebody had to ask: How do you know when looters were there?
Simple. The national newspaper, El Diario, runs a picture of a Page Three girl on, well, page three; and when looters are spending a few days looting a site, they always put the Page Three girl on a wall. They use the rest of the paper to start fires, or for toilet paper, but they always leave page three on the wall and, like all newspapers, it has the date on it.
