In the old Forum when you logged in, you'd see the "My Messages" link show the number of new messages waiting for you in your inbox. Now, there's no indication at all if you have a new message, which means that you have to go there and look.
Not ever renovation is one – or a good one imho.
I concur. Unless there were some improvements for security purposes that needed adding, I don't understand why this "upgrade" was deemed necessary.
Mod edit: if it's displaying properly on your system, there IS a number to indicate the number of new messages in your PM inbox (see my attached image crop). Why you don't see it is a mystery to me... I don't think it's something that can be turned on/off in user preferences (I checked for you and saw nothing to that effect, just like in the old forum). There is a checkbox for "Show a popup when I receive new messages." (which is OFF in my account settings) so I suppose you could turn that ON and see if you get a pop-up telling you that you've got new PMs (I'll send you a test PM in a minute so you can try that if you want).
As for fixing it... of course, please try different browsers to see if it behaves any differently in them, and maybe try clearing your BEA cookies and then logging back in. If all that fails, then you should click the Support tab and contact admins for help.
As for the rest: lots of people have expressed their unhappiness with the design and usability of the upgraded forum, myself included. However, the upgrade was long overdue (we were WAY behind on versions vs. current) and though it wasn't mentioned much prior to the change, it's probably safe to assume the current version is "safer" re: security issues than the old version (our recent spate of spam notwithstanding... that's a separate thing AFAIK). I've personally contacted admins more than once to explain why certain aspects of the upgraded forum should be modified (to improve readability, reduce scrolling necessary, etc...) and even included links to this and other Site Issues threads so that admins could SEE for themselves the opinions of other users... but right now they're just concentrating on fixing bigger problems and re-activating accounts, etc... so other stuff will have to wait. In addition, the admin who's been dealing with forum issues does have non-forum responsibilities too, so when bugs/problems are reported to him, he may not be available to work on them right away.
At least, that's my understanding of the process. -PalEdited to add: Ironically, without me having to take any of your suggestions, the indicator has suddenly started working now. Thanks!
