In the old Forum when you logged in, you'd see the "My Messages" link show the number of new messages waiting for you in your inbox. Now, there's no indication at all if you have a new message, which means that you have to go there and look.

Not ever renovation is one – or a good one imho.

I concur. Unless there were some improvements for security purposes that needed adding, I don't understand why this "upgrade" was deemed necessary.

Mod edit: if it's displaying properly on your system, there IS a number to indicate the number of new messages in your PM inbox (see my attached image crop). Why you don't see it is a mystery to me... I don't think it's something that can be turned on/off in user preferences (I checked for you and saw nothing to that effect, just like in the old forum). There is a checkbox for "Show a popup when I receive new messages." (which is OFF in my account settings) so I suppose you could turn that ON and see if you get a pop-up telling you that you've got new PMs (I'll send you a test PM in a minute so you can try that if you want).

As for fixing it... of course, please try different browsers to see if it behaves any differently in them, and maybe try clearing your BEA cookies and then logging back in. If all that fails, then you should click the Support tab and contact admins for help.

As for the rest: lots of people have expressed their unhappiness with the design and usability of the upgraded forum, myself included. However, the upgrade was long overdue (we were WAY behind on versions vs. current) and though it wasn't mentioned much prior to the change, it's probably safe to assume the current version is "safer" re: security issues than the old version (our recent spate of spam notwithstanding... that's a separate thing AFAIK). I've personally contacted admins more than once to explain why certain aspects of the upgraded forum should be modified (to improve readability, reduce scrolling necessary, etc...) and even included links to this and other Site Issues threads so that admins could SEE for themselves the opinions of other users... but right now they're just concentrating on fixing bigger problems and re-activating accounts, etc... so other stuff will have to wait. In addition, the admin who's been dealing with forum issues does have non-forum responsibilities too, so when bugs/problems are reported to him, he may not be available to work on them right away.

At least, that's my understanding of the process. -Pal

Edited to add: Ironically, without me having to take any of your suggestions, the indicator has suddenly started working now. Thanks! :)

Robin, the reply button is at the top left above the post area, not in the 'actions' pull-down which is where you'd expect it to be.

gonZo adds: There's another reply button at the bottom left, below the last post on any page.

Pal adds: and oddly/inconsistently, there IS a Reply choice that can be found in the Actions pull-down menu ...but it only exists in the Private Message area (i.e.: when you're reading a PM and want to reply).
sorry if that has already been asked but to me all buttons look weird kind of japanese chars. i m running it on my android device with opera.    EDIT sorry screenshot was not good and i can t even delete it

I deleted it. Nobody else has reported that problem, so please try to get a screenshot of it and post it here so we can try to get it fixed. Thanks for reporting it. –gonZo

Ok here is one sent from my computer. Done from my mobile was impossible.
PS: if necessary for analysis I can provide more screenshots.

As I said in that other thread, a lack of support for custom fonts is a known issue for opera mobile on Android. Try upgrading your Opera to a newer version or switch to a different browser with better standards support like Chrome (yes, i pains me to say that, but...)

I never access the Forum from a mobile device, so I've never noticed.

I will say that the new theme makes distinguishing hyperlinks very difficult. A workaround is to enclose hyperlinks in underline tags.

Hey,
Now that the furore has settled a bit, could I ask/suggest that the "login" link be moved or duplicated up at the top right to where the profile/new posts dropdown is when you are logged in?

My eyes and mouse automatically go there when I fire up the site (for the new posts link) and if I'm logged out I have to refocus on the menu bar.

Cheers

I'll log the request, but moving things around onscreen is at a pretty low priority right now.

I don't know what the users that have complained about the search function being as bad as ever are smoking?
I have the exact opposite experience with it.The search function is 100 times better than before.
Everything that I have searched for usually comes up at the top of the page.No more wading through page after page before finding what I'm looking for or having no results.
I posted the search result below for Desiree Vega. Before the upgrade,I got no results for her and this is what came up.

Thank you to the administrators/mods for all of the upgrades.

Question: Is there a setting to put newest messages at the top of the thread, like the old board could do?  Thanks.

As before, that setting is configurable in the Look and Layout section of your user profile. I have adjusted it for you. -gonZo
