Though I understand your point, I consider 'handsome' as it applies to women to mean an attractive woman of or approaching her middle years, sometimes tall (tho' sometimes not) who, despite being somewhat understated in her attire manages to inspire erections from any single man with an IQ of more than 140 in her vicinity.

By the way, is it my imagination or has Janeane Garofalo fallen OFF the Strangely list with age?  When I first saw her, she seemed a bit too pale and sullen and moonfaced for me to consider her especially mainstream, but I saw her in a movie starring Jerry Stiller called The Independent and she looked a bit tanned and very radiant and fetching.  I think of her as a refutation of the "older is stranger" rule.

I'm going to throw in Maria Bartiromo.  I know, the mainstream accepts her, yet I'm fascinated by how "off" she is.  The shape of her face is unusual, she's heavily made-up, and her voice isn't what I would choose -- I suppose that's why I go along with Lorraine Bracco, because her Bronx acccent in Medicine Man grated but in an intriguing way -- and yet somehow it all comes together and works for her, making her a sex symbol for financial geeks, something I'm not sure Consuelo Mack has ever quite nailed.

Oh, and try this one: Lesley Stahl.

Yes, I agree with both Maria Bartiromo despite her (somewhat) mainstream acceptance. She's extremely fetching. I've always had a thing for J.G. of course, even when she's been paler and thicker, so it's hard for me to really consign her to the 'strangely' list, but of course from mainstream POV, she definitely is.

Don't freak out, but did someone already mention Cokie Roberts?

Shelia Tousey

Who is Shelia Tousey?  She plays Emma Leaphorn in these PBS movies executive produced by Robert Redford based on the work of Tony Hillerman, first Skinwalkers and then Coyote Waits.  The older I get the more monogamous my fantasies become -- though there's never any stopping the good old adolescent ones -- and the character of Emma Leaphorn is prime wife material: strong, supportive, wry, realistically romantic.  Gotta love here, and Shelia Tousey plays her well.

Ellen Greene is so underappreciated.  She got stuck as the strange friend of Priscilla Presley in Naked Gun 33 1/3.  Ever catch her in the early cable movie Glory! Glory! with Richard Thoams?  Quite a hoot.
