Although your parents are merely family friends and the fact that they're refered to as relatives may indicate a sort of trust.  Your choice to refuse and consult was probably for the best as then you'll know how to proceed.  I personally like L_C_R_ANT's interpretation of the situation since even if you and your friend of sorts eventually find out that you both feel the same way about the situation it may betray the trust (and friendship) of the both or your parents.
