Calling for Mark T's ouster
« on: June 13, 2001, 11:14:00 AM »
The continuing saga of our good BEA friend Mark T. has reached the breaking point.  We all know about Mark T's alleged r/t activites that prevent him from providing updates to the story archive,  However, this has been on going for nearly a year now.   If Mark T. is unable to fulfill the obligations that he implicitly or explicitly promised by volunteering for this job, well, I feel it is time for him to step down.

Thus, I am in favor of calling for a "no-confidence" vote at this point in time.  The interminable delays have been intolerable and preposterous.

The problem of course is if MarkT is ousted who would run the Archive. do you volunteer? if not i suggest you be quiet because if you point out that someone is not doing a job that you want done, but you will not do it yourself. You have no right to call for their removal. I understand completely your frustration, i am feel almost the same way but i am not willing to take over so i refuse to complain. Also i think the main problem people have is the fact that MarkT never responds to these critisms which in some peoples minds just solidifies his guilt.
Oh well i have ranted enough tonight

If he has a contractual agreement that says so many updates must be completed by a certain date, you have a gripe.

If he is getting paid for his work and he isn't doing it, and you are a paying BEA member, you have a gripe.

If this is all just because you want a few more stories for free..... then you don't have much of a gripe at all.

Feel free to volunteer to host your own gallery of stories....

But don't be surprised if someone complains about you if it isn't EXACTLY as they invision it to be.

Pacman is correct, of course. I don't see what good it accomplishes to thourougly rip on someone because you haven't gotten new porn in two months.

But it is discouraging that Mark has other things to do, which is totally understandable. I think he could stand to have a little help around the story archive, since it is such a definitive site for BE stories. And yes, I would gladly volunteer to do that. I've said it before. And many have echoed that sentiment.

I am the last person who should mention anything about not updating their archives, but I am also dismayed at the lack of new stories. But here's a question, Is it that Mark is busy (which I'm sure he is) or is it that there is a lack of stories? If any of you check the other locations a person might find BE stories, Chili's, Wren's, or Diana's there seems to be a decided lack of stories period. I've often wondered if Mark is sitting on a pile of stories or just doesn't have enough to warrant an update.

Hi
I am a paying member of BEA and I'm deeply dissabpointed about the updating situation at Mark T's. I'm also dissapointed about the lack of member's bonus stories, cause this was the mainreason becoming a member.
I certainly will not extend my membership until I'll see any changes.
sad but true

I totally agree.  Mark T has turned into a major disappointment and a real goof.   What's this guy gonna be....busy forever?   I mean we all get really busy every now and then but this clown's been "busy" now for over a year!  With no end in sight!

It is time for Mark T to put up or step down.  This has reached epidemic proportions and is now absurd.

So *bleeping* what if he's not getting paid?  He volunteered and made promises which he is unable to even come close to keeping!    Once you volunteer and make promises, you are more than just impling that you will keep to some sort of "reasonable" schedule.  If I volunteer to paint your house, show up when I God damn well feel like, do a half-assed job, then suddenly vanish without any explanation, you'd be pretty damn unhappy, too.

Mark also has failed miserably in even offering the slightest tidbit of communication to us.  That has exacerbated an already inflammatory situation  I don't blame people for being upset and disillusioned.

Furthermore, others have not volunteered...TO THEIR CREDIT....because they know they would be unable to keep their promises.  At least they have a modium of integrity and pride.

You are right...the time has come.  I vote "NO CONFIDENCE".

I think that both sides have valid points. It is obvious that a job is not being done - we can all agree on that.

However the fact is that people HAVE volunteered to take over the position - and may their names be honoured - but as I recall (and if it's wrong please correct me) someone said that MarkT had said that he would handle it and wanted no one to take over or assist. Which is what I believe the problem to be. That and the fact that freeloaders want more free stories.

Some have mentioned the idea of an autonomous submission system - and I believe that I might have a friend who has done a piece of code that would be perfect for it.

So evidently there are a variety of options available to solve this problem.

FYI: I think Mark could be sitting on a lot of stories due to the fact that many people have submitted stories and have complained at their lack of posting.

Anyway you can still checkout my newish story within the pages of Thanks: http://thanks.hooters.dk/

I have been lurking here for some time now, and this is my first time saying anything in the forum.  However, I do feel compelled to say something about this topic, because I feel very much the same as many others.  Now I may not have all my facts straight here, and if I don't please correct me, but it is my impression that the story archive is not Mark T's (in the traditional sense of ownership) but rather belonging to the BEA, with Mark just managing it, as it were.  This is important because if it is true BEA members shouldn't have to start their own story site because we already have one.  The other problem is that the Story Archive is still regarded as "The Place" to submit stories.  It does me very little good to start my own site if people won't send me stories cause they want to send them to a perceived better site.  This fact, I believe, puts an added onus of responsibility on to who ever takes up the mantle of the Story Archive.  I agree with the others.  If Mark T is unable to meet the responsibilities inherent in the job he volunteered to fill, and there are others who are willing to try, he should step down gracefully.  To do otherwise would be selfish on his part.  By the way, anyone who wants to take this post and forward it to NBC substituting the words Lorne Micheals and Saturday Night Live where ever appropriate feel free.

Mark T has done an excellent job with the story archive. He has been busy lately and has not been able to update. He has been doing this job for free, and when he updated regularly and everyone was happy I didnīt see any "good job" or "thank you" posts. People tend to take everything for granted. You go to the archive, read the stories and that is it. But behind those stories there is a lot of work involved: formatting, editting, spell checking... all that for free. Ask the writers if the receive feedback or fan e-mails. They rarely do. It is really easy to complain and flame, but remember, when you were reading all those stories it was Mark T who posted them.

Tman.

This reminds me of a story I have about promises....

My own MOTHER once promised that I would get a Trap-Jaw action figure (He-Man) for Christmas one year.. and I didn't get it. I got Man-At-Arms. Did I call for her to be ousted as my mother? Of course not. I sucked it up and pretended that I liked Man-At-Arms just to make her feel good.

I've been promised a lot of things a lot times...

People break promises. Lots of people. Get used to it.

And yes, one day I did finally get Trap Jaw and still have him to this day.

You really know how to bring a tear to the eye Pac. Oh, wait I just spilt boiling acid on my crotch.

I've got a similar merchandise story. One day I wanted a Darth Maul action figure to keep for 30 years until it was worthless / priceless. I went out and bought it and it still resides in an airtight container in my impentrable bunker 100m below ground level.

Don't ask me what the moral of that story is - probably: capitalism is good.

Talk about laughable!   MarkT IS NOT "doing a good job".  It would be correct to say that MarkT DID a good job; but time has passed him by.  He no longer does  ANY job, good or bad!

Furthermore, MarkT has NOT "been busy recently".  This travesty has been prolonged for nearly 1 full year now, bringing shame and disgrace raining down on the beleaguered and embattled Mark.

God bless Mark; he may be a wonderful person, but time has definitely passed him by.
