Just a small correction, mastert. Most of what I'm hearing from Congress is that this is one monumentally stupid proposal. When Bush talked about it today, he said he wanted an open line of credit to a bunch of managers who have totally fucked up their work so far.

They didn't fuck anything up.  They created something that caused them to make a shitload of money and now they're going to be able to stick the government with the bill so they can do it all over again.

Dow 10570-11800
« Reply #106 on: July 22, 2008, 03:33:48 PM »
New stipulation.

I started this when we fell below 12345 -- 1-2-3-4-5 -- and hoped we could stay above 11111, suggesting 1-1-1-1-1, or stasis, a doldrums.  But I won't wait till 9999 to concede to mastert -- and I won't wait till 12345 to say life may be rosy once more, either.

So I'll stick with my 10570 floor, and add 1230 -- that has a 1-2-3 in it -- for a ceiling of 11800.  If we're still in 10570-11800, we're still in doldrums; if we fall below, it's legitimate panic time; if we rise above, maybe there's a v-e-r-y s-l-o-w rally and we've already hit 2008's bottom.

Slightly dangerous suggestion to make as we hit 11602.50, but oh well.

Meanwhile, I'm rather stunned by all the discussion this simple numbers-watching has inspired.  So here are my own two cents: when I hear "Goldilocks economy," I hear code for "We refuse to acknowledge that Clinton's co-opting of traditionally 'Republican' fiscal responsibility helped boost the economy, and will blame all that on one giant dot.com bubble, while excusing away nearly eight years of George W. Bush as 'ingenious equilibrium' while at precisely the same time complaining that the economy since 2000 simply isn't getting enough good press."

Or, the Holy Roman Empire was not holy, not Roman, and not an empire.  Discuss among yourselves.

Yes; there are some pretty reasonable proposals floating around Congress. That limit on CEO pay sounds good standing by itsellf.

Would you want someone telling YOU that you're not worth the salary a company paid to hire you?

If the government gets to mandate earning potential, bye-bye USA...

Q-"Unfathomable"-BE

When the CEO fucks up so badly the company asks the government for a bailout, yes.

Unfortunately, congress gave them the bailout without the salary requirement.
Someday, chi1dren, this entire fuck-up will be yours.

Aaaaand ... we've been here before   (close of 11131) -- just a question now of not losing another six hundred points ...

Have we hit the bottom?

We haven't seen the Dow drop much bellow 11000.   With oil prices falling now, maybe this is the time to invest.

As I have come to expect from Hiram, that is an excellent question.  I doubt that anything will rally or rocket off much for the remainder of '08, but it's still fair to start wondering what's worth buying ...

It's Bernanke's job now, but Greenspan can't keep quiet and he still has a lot of pull -- he says not only that it's 50-50 that we're in a recession (no major surprise there) but he called Fannie Mae and Freddy Mac major accidents waiting to happen.  Also, a report on sluggish growth didn't help either.

Greenspan got us where we are today, I wish he’d shut up.

70-30 chance of recession.  See the jobless data - people seeking jobless benefits highest in five years.

I'm hearing this called the best rally in four months -- the close today appears to be 11615.77.  Eh, another 185 points and I may declare a rebound -- though I would still expect a v-e-r-y s-l-o-w crawl back to the 12345 realm when I first started this thread.

I could stand to be thinking of possible buys -- just can't seem to come up with any right this moment ...

I sent off a 10000 dollar check to my pension fund last week, I'd been holding out to see where the dust was going to settle, I may have been a tad too late.

Although I'd specified European funds this time.

The dollar's getting stronger, who'da thunk it.  A rally of over 300 has landed it at 11734.32 -- but I'm still going to hold out for the next 65 points before I commit to a possible bounce ...

The dollar's stronger than in a long time -- I noticed since I earn most of my money in Euros.  But I don't give a walking, crawling, or flying shit what the DOW does.

Umm ... duly noted, AZ (though no one is really stopping you from starting a Strength of the Dollar thread).

As today zooms down to a close of 11386, I'm just giving this a month's end bump.  It was over a month ago that I settled on a bracket of 10570-11800 and it has held.  A few days back there were intra-day levels slightly above 11800, but I have always stuck to the close of each day, and on that score the bracket remains in play.

I'll be a bit surprised if the bracket cracks -- down or up -- before October ...
