Actually, that's not a recreation, when they finished the shooting on LoTR, they left the set as a tourist attraction.  They were then able to re-use it, with just a few touch ups, for filming The Hobbit.  It's just outside a place called Matamata.  So you can go see the original set, which is bloody cool.  I think you might even be able to get a drink at the Green Dragon.   :)

I was under the impression that everything that was built for LOTR was removed so that the natural habitat was basically untouched.  Also, no one builds houses with insides for movies.  You build the outside and then the inside is shot on a set.

An US Air Force special ops helicopter stationed here in Nellis Air Force Base in North Las Vegas conducting training exercises near the Valley of Fire state park located about 40 miles northeast of Las Vegas near the Moapa River Indian Reservation. If you ever saw the movie "The Flintstones" starring John Goodman, it was filmed in that state park because the rock formations look otherworldly. They are Red, yellow and striped. They do look like they are in flames.

Tied up near the USS Arizona memorial, The USS Missouri was the ship in which World War 2 was officially ended when the Japanese Empire surrendered to the allies in Tokyo Bay. She is now in Battleship row in Ford Island, where I was stationed back from 1979-1983 when attached to the USS Robert E. Lee (SSBN-601) and later on to the USS Puffer (SSN-652) and she was officially decommissioned in 1992.
