Take the word 'taxi'. As far as I know, this word is the same word (complete with the same spelling and meaning) across more languages than any other word. But the social aspect it describes (a car and driver for rent for a relatively short period of time) is just as widespread, if not moreso. In effect, these languages have 'standardized' on the word 'taxi' to describe this mode of transportation.
The word 'computer' is fairly widespread across multiple languages. But the French decided to rigidly stick with "l'ordinateur". Puzzling, but that's the way it is.
We could keep coming up with examples and counterexamples of words. But, words are words, grammar is a whole 'nother kettle of fish. Then there's diglossia.
