Could a really buxom type be a mainstream star today?
« on: June 16, 2003, 01:27:32 PM »
Now, I realize that BEA is a rather particularlized community, even as eclectic as it is.  The thing that ties all of us together is an interest in (or possession of)...how to put this delicately.....major league casabas.

Yet, as we're all too keenly aware of, we have to have search tools like Breasts in Movies or VCR Alerts to find things of interest on TV and in films.  In this environment, actresses like JLH and singers like B Spears have become "notable" for their "curves", but in reality, neither could fill even *one* cup of the bra of an Anita Ekberg or Samantha Fox.

So, my question is simply this--apart from career ambition, why aren't there more major starlets who are in that mold most of us here at BEA really crave?  Miriam Gonzales is a perfect example of what I'm getting at.  Watching her Captain Morgan vid, and some of the candid stuff she's done, I just can't comprehend why she hasn't become a *major* star.  She has amazing good looks, an adorable and sweet on camera demeanor, and the camera obviously loves her.  And I suggest this without knowing a thing more about her, but she comes across as a pretty intelligent and articulate person.  I'm not talking about seeing her in a bunny costume on prime time TV, but if Pam Anderson can have recurring roles on shows like Home Improvement and Baywatch, why not Miriam, or her like? Possibly, it doesn't even interest her, but I guess the real point is that somewhere in the world I'm sure there is a well-endowed woman who aspires to be a mainstream actress, and in today's environment, she probably will never have a decent opportunity.  So the point of this ramble, finally, is, if any of you producer/director types, or anyone with Hollywood connections, frequent this board, please know that some of us would love to see some curvier actresses in Hollywood!

It's not just a question of obsessive directors - it's society in general. While have big bust lovers in high places would certainly be a help in the short term, in the long term you need to have a society wide interest in big boobs or any attempt to make big busts mainsteam would be abortive.

How could we do this? Well, I'm not entirely sure but after a nap - I'll think about it and then onto solving world hunger.

Big busts need more support!

I doubt it. We will never be mainstream.

First, we would need to completely turn around the fashion models. And they are rail thin because of practical need, so that's already out. It's never gonna happen.

Second, look at the negative response to even some of the more "respected" stars get when they go big, Jane Fonda, or Demi Moore for example.

Third, look at the history of big breasted actresses, for the most part they are not taken seriously by the mainstream. Look at Jayne Mansfield, for example.

Even nowadays, somebody like Dolly Parton or Elvira have to make jokes about their boobs, they cannot simply acknowledge them as positive, aesthetic or even erotic assets.

Speaking of Jayne, I was watching this show on censorship and there were a few good racks, for example, Mamie Van Doren & Jane Russell talking about that famous bra. But also they showed the whole sequence of Jayne Mansfield at the Oscars (everybody know about the famous photo of Sofia Loren looking at her cleavage?), she is walking around with her breasts almost fully uncovered and cantilevered by some spaced out bra, and she goes up to host Ron Reagan and announces the winner for some category. INCREDIBLE!

Forget about world hunger.  This is a much more serious crisis.

I've seen that clip.  What made it shocking for the time wasn't just Jayne's outfit, it was the fact that she was jiggling all over--like jello on springs.  Reagan said something that drew laughs from the audience, if I'm not mistaken.

Back to the question I asked, though, what I do not understand is how action film "actors" with big pecs and biceps can be huge stars and yet a sexy woman has to be relagated to the straight-to-video or adult section of the vid store. It isn't even a question of exploitation--if a curvaceous woman wants to be an actress, why should the insecurities of society or feminism dictate that she not be the "right type" to be a movie star?  It's more than puzzling--it is problematic.  I'd doubt that we are going to see many more naturally voluptuous women on TV or in films, if they all have to be hard-bodies...

Guess that'[s why I have such a fondness for actresses of the past.

I find two roads diverge - Much "mainstream" is controlled by a limited group of people...and most are not exactly the most MANO types. Hollyweird is about money/power - The current $$/power base in woman particularly are not prone to wanting extreme figured woman ( I believe they are intimidated ) - look at Charlie Angels financed by Drew Barrymore. Mostly, this "base" and the wimpy men that support it, do not want to take extreme figures in serious roles. HOWEVER, you would like to see extreme figures in more supporting roles ala ANITA EKBERG ( "Four for Texas"). IF YOU WERE Drew Barrymore, would you want to have an extreme figured co-star? INSECURITY runs deep...BUT, there is the "genre" for PAMELA ANDERSON that continues to show that there is a market for CURVES. AND, we still have ROGER EBERT, the former RUSS MEYER co-producer as a leading review critic. HEY ROGER ! Speak up !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Argyle, I like this thread.

This dicussion proves why Sophia Loren is in a class all by herself.  She burst upon the scene as an Oscar winner, taken VERY seriously by a director husband.  Loren and Ponti were a brilliant combination of hard work and phenomenal sex appeal.  This kind of partnership usually just misfires in embarrassing vanity projects, as in the case of Meshulam Riklis and his bride Pia Zadora.

If we want a busty mainstream actress, we'll probably have to import her, the way we did Sophia.  In a weirdly parallel way, notice how it took an Austrian named Schwarzenegger to make the pumped-up action hero -- and not simply the kung fu expert -- the lead.  We seem to prefer our unusually built stars somehow exotic.

When I think of Marilyn Monroe, I think of her, despite Bus Stop and The Misfits, primarily as a comedienne -- but I don't know if we can ever get that back.  The trouble with Jayne Mansfield is that she seized upon Monroe's already played-up persona with her own over-the-top (so to speak) parody of it, and Jayne is now looked back upon as something of a tragic figure.  From Loni Anderson to Pamela Anderson, there is work for the busty sexpot but not much respect.

There does seem to be one X factor: sassiness.  Dolly Parton is so magnificent not only because of her build but because of her exuberance of personality and talent.  (No one even ASKED her to write the theme song to 9 to 5; she was cast for it and then figured, Why not?)  Sassiness enabled Julia Roberts to wear a pushup bra playing real life disher of sass Erin Brockovich; Julia got an Oscar and Erin got to host a show.  They may not be quite "buxom," but their respective cleavages merited honorable mentions.

The rule seems to be: if you can import it, or play it with down-home common-sense sassiness, you can do it.

All we need now is a female spin on the buddy cop movie.  Some sassy folksy busty cop gets teamed up with some busty Amazon skyscraper of a woman with a thick foreign accent.  Action ensues.  It might work.

There is a practical consideration to all of this.  A movie maker knows that by casting an extreme-bodied female that body becomes the story every time it appears on camera.  Can you watch a June Wilkinson or Anita Ekberg movie and think about anything else – even for a nanosecond?  I know I can’t.  That’s ok for us.  But not necessarily for the producer or director who has a tale to tell that may have little or nothing to do with chests.  I’m amazed that Dolly Parton has had the career she has, but I also know that I’ve waited against all odds for the role to come along when she finally sets them free.  Alas, I’m still waiting.  Can you imagine that movie moment?

So in a word, distraction.  Not for us, but for the mainstream.  Still, I’m with you, Argyle.  I long for the next Ekberg soaking herself in the Trevi Fountain.  So let’s start our own studio.

This is certainly a true statement, but it includes an implied definition of "busty" as somewhere around DD cups.  With the sole post 50's exception of Dolly Parton (that's the 1950's, not Dolly's bustline - but then again she probably is post 50 in that area too!), who I respect extremely, but who got all of her early acting opportunities as an outgrowth of her singing career fame [then once cast she wowed everyone with her formidable acting talent].

Since the 50's, girls with cup sizes any bigger than DD have been relegated to roles being the brunt of dumb tramp jokes, or T&A eye candy with one or two lines at most, in every Hollywood film role I can think of.  IMHO this is based on film producers assumptions that the general public cannot take girls with larger cup sizes seriously - a fact which is unfortunately but undeniably true.  The rare exceptions have been independently financed production vehicles specifically developed for Lolo Ferrari, Anna Nicole Smith etc. (it's handy to be married to a multimillionaire) or the "family fetish" films of Andy Sidaris and clan, where "return on investment" is a secondary consideration. [hey Andy and Christian, ... have boobs, will act (cheap) !!!]

If you're grasping for a real life example, look no farther than Sidaris starlet Shae Marks, who has worked on both sides of the DD dotted line and who has chosen to return to the single letter side!  No less of a (3rd generation) acting pro than Drew Barrymore made the same choice herself without waiting until she grew the third D!  Who can blame her after watching 'Punky Boobster's acting career go downhill as fast as her bustline grew uphill.

It always hurts me so, when I think of those stars getting breast reductions...
Punky,& Drew I wish they would of come, and talked with me first.

At least Pam looks to be back in a big way.  Whew, it was scary for awhile there.

I'm miss Dolly, in her old plump "bigger" days.

But, now Anna has gotten so big that her boobs don't look that big on her anymore.

I've always thought that the lead actress in the "rocketeer" had some very nice full breasts.
Then I saw her in "Mullhullen Falls", and WOW, I watch that movie just to see her tits!!! In one scene she's got this dress, that just makes her boobs... Bam!! out there. Much bigger than she was in the Rocketeer.

But sadly I've seen her in her last two or three movies.... & nothing... I'm afraid that she must have gone the way of Punky, & Drew, & the little girl from "the Addams family".

I'm sorry, I'm bad with names.
