The discovery of 1,000 bodies buried on its campus has caused the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Miss. to change its construction plans.

The University of Mississippi Medical Center planned to build a parking garage east of the dental school, but testing in the area revealed the bodies, which are believed to have been patients at the Mississippi State Lunatic Asylum a century ago. none of the bodies are identified.

The cost of moving the bodies is believed to be about $3 million, or about $3,000 per body.

Ya know, gOOb, I'd like to say something snide, but in Washington we made plutonium for 40 years, and apparently the waste disposal plan was, "Dump it in a barrel and we'll think about it later," and now we've got about 60,000 tons of shit that glows in the dark and no place to put it.

So Mississippi is greener than Washington? Who wouldah thunk it? ::)

That would be the Hanford site at the confluence of the Snake, Yakima and Columbia Rivers.  Plutonium manufactured at the site was used in Fat Man.

Fat Man and all his descendents, about 5,000 warheads.

GOOD NEWS FOR GEEZERS ;D ;D ;D

State Income Tax: 3% to 5%
State Sales Tax: 7%
Estate Tax/Inheritance Tax: No/No

The Magnolia State offers a sweet income tax deal for retirees. Social Security benefits and income from IRAs, 401(k)s, 403(b)s, Keoghs, and public and private pension plans are exempt from state income taxes.

Prescription drugs, residential utilities, motor fuel, newspapers and health care services are exempt from state sales taxes.

Mississippi is also home to some of the lowest property taxes in the nation, according to the Tax Foundation. Median property tax on a $98,000 median-valued home is $508, the Tax Foundation calculates. Seniors who are eligible for the state's homestead exemption are exempt from taxes on the first $75,000 of value.

Mississippi has long had some of the most liberal cannabis laws in the nation. Long before medical marijuana was ever a thing out west, Mississippi decriminalized simple possession. Anything under an ounce is considered a civil (ie non-criminal) misdemeanor, punishable by a $250 fine and appearance in court.

Even today, Mississippi is only one of 18 states that has decriminalized simple possession.

I note that this month fortune.com has an article on the mixture of corruption and religion. Mississippi comes out on top in both. Congratulations, I guess.  ::)

And just a note about "decriminalization"--It is a positive step, but it was the positive step of the 1980s, sort of a way to give Nancy Reagan the finger. Of course, Mississippi remains ahead of such states as Illinois and Pennsylvania.
