I realize we're mostly looking at factory model cars, but I love when people try something janky with customization.

In the cartoon Speed Racer, his car, The Mach 5, included powerful rotary saws that could extend at the push of a button to slice & dice anything in the way.

The Mach 5 is a car body that is just beauty.  Yes I would want one.  Afford one?  Probably not.  But still want.

I always thought the Mach 5 looked cool.  I never knew anyone made a real life version, though.  That's one masterful job.

Back in the 60's when Speed Racer was on, I loved the show. At the time, at first, I didn't realize it was a Japanese cartoon but later on my older brother pointed out to me the studio credits of the show and then I learned it was from the same Japanese studio that made Astroboy.

THIS IS MY FIRST CAR I OWNED OUTRIGHT! I saw this photo and it blew me away. It is a 1968 Chevrolet Impala which I bought in 1974 from the owner of the Exxon service station I worked at in Houston. I paid a princely sum at the time of $700 for it. It belonged to his mother, but she had passed away and he wanted to get rid of it and I needed transportation, so I got it. Like the one in the photo, it had a 327 cubic inch small block Chevy engine with 250 horsepower, a two speed Powerglide transmission, air conditioning and two doors. This one is the same color and style with the black vinyl rooftop and white stripe sidewall tires. I kept it until 1979 when I was transferred from San Diego to Pearl Harbor and gave it to my little brother. He kept it until 1983 when he was T-boned on the passenger side by a **92** driver in a Toyota Corolla. He was fine but the Toyota was destroyed, and he got himself a Chevy S-10 pickup truck. I too did have an accident in that Impala when in 1975, right before I joined the Navy, I was in an intersection, and I got the green light and proceeded forward when this woman in a tiny Fiat X19 tiny two-seater sports car ran the light and hit me on the right front bumper. I merely had a scratch on my bumper while her car looked like an elephant had stepped on the front bumper and completely crushed it and collapsed the front steering of it. Big old American Iron vs little foreign job. 4400 pounds vs 1600 pounds. Anyways, you always remember your first car.

This is a 1969 Plymouth Roadrunner Superbird, a car I wish I'd been able to buy but have never been able to afford. Back in those days, NASCAR actually used real stock cars for racing even though they were modified for safety by adding roll bars and superchargers to make them go faster but essentially it was American made sedans. The Superbird was already modified for racing off the showroom floor from the dealer and they were raced in Daytona, Talladega and other NASCAR racetracks. If you wanted the backseat, it was an option you had to purchase separately. It was so much faster due to better aerodynamics and a 426Hemi engine that was much better than GM or Ford products at the time. European cars at the time were known for their maneuverability and agility and American cars were known for their size and brute power.

The thread is “Cars I’d Like To Know”, so I’d say any one-off or concept car or TV car or such perfectly fits the bill.  It’s all about something you’re not familiar with and would love to get to know better.  pedonbio started off this thread with old exotic cars, but it could be new or old, I should think. 

I’ll always love the Mach 5.

I believe I’ve posted this car in another thread somewhere, but it’s definitely a car I’d love to drive!  The center headlights flipped around to hide from view when unwanted.

This is a car I really wanted to get in the early 80s, one of the few Detroit tanks I liked from 70s, at the time.  These days I appreciate most of those colossal blocks of metal, which are no match for the design wonders of the 50s and 60s, but still have their own nostalgic look.

I really liked that back window/trunk treatment, one of the few cars that did that, and I still think it looks really good.  The Corvette Stingray is about the only car I can recall off the top of my head that did anything similar.

5 mph bumpers also made a lot of these huge boats look extra clunky.  This car looks so much nicer with the slim chrome bumpers.

Mid-thirties Auburn boat tail speedster.  The was a Deusenberg, too.  But something more modern?  Yeah, only the Vette comes to mind
